Today's meeting was at the Ben Lomond Bistro.  The speakers were Bill Rush and Teresa Todd of Los Medicos Voladores.  Bill emphasized that the next trip available for Rotarian "Ride-Alongs" is September 1 - 4 for the BECA Health Fair in northern Mexico.

President Mike opened the meeting with the flag salute, introductions and Thought for the Day. Mike asked us to have a moment of silence in honor of Chartering member, Joe Busa, who passed away on Friday night.
 
Announcements: Karen announced the sessions for 5170 Rotary Assembly; Mike said Bill and Linda Gates are matching donations; Julie and Sue gave updates on health issues.
 
Detective: Cameron quizzed us on candidate trivia!!
 
Guest Speaker: Bill and Teresa shared information and stories of the non-profit, Comunidad. Comunidad volunteers work with indigenous tribes in Northern Baja California. The villages are remote and poverty is very high. Comunidad has three different areas of focuses: health care, BECA (education) and improvements to the infrastructure. Volunteers, including Rotarians, recently replaced an old building that housed one of the villages health care facilities.
 
The BECA program is a scholarship program that supports the education of middle school, high school and college students. This year there are 227 students in the program. Student support levels are $77 and $115 for secondare and high school students. College students receive $153 toward their costs (tuition alone is $400). BECA’s annual scholarship program costs are $28,000. Teresa and Bill encouraged Rotarians to join them for this year’s BECA fair.
