Members in attendance: Don, Linda, Joe, Julie, Mary, Cameron, Heather, Charlie, Ken, Karen, Ralph, Carol, Sue, Franziska, and Scott.  Guests: James Rouse (South Foreland Rotary, UK), Speaker Jen Mickelsen, and Linda Deal.

 

President Karen opened the meeting with the flag salute, introductions and Thought for the Day.

 

Announcements: Felton library event this Saturday from noon to 4:00 pm. There is a drawing and an online auction of yard art. Tickets are $5. Memorial Day parade in Felton is on – we will meet in the lumberyard at 9:00 am. Jeff Orth’s Roast and Toast is being held at the Guglielmo Winery on June 22 at 5:30. You can sign-up on the district website.

 

Scott Deal was inducted into the club. Karen reminded Scott that Rotarians live by the Four Way Test and the standing Code of Conduct. Karen presented him with his red badge and a copy of the Rotarian.

 

Guest Speaker: Jen Mickelsen: SLV Water District, Environmental Programs Manager

The District gets most of their water from surface water, and as summer winds down, they often end up using ground water (springs). There is a 5-mile surface water diversion across Ben Lomond Mt that takes the water to Boulder Creek where it is treated. The District has an aging infrastructure and Jen said we should contact them if they see a leak. There was a lot of damage this winter from broken pipes, slides on roads and flooded areas. The District manages over 2,000 acres of watershed.

 

The Lompico Aquifer is shared between SLV and SV and is below an impermeable layer. While they are using the water in the Lompico Aquifer, it is not being refilled. The District is looking into recharging the water in this area. SLV, SV and the County are looking into managing their water in a sustainable way SLV Water and the County received a grant to study the recharging of the aquifers. Jen encourages residents will become involved in the meetings and decisions facing the District.

 

From the SLV Water District website-- Despite this season’s, major storms and the easing of statewide drought emergency, the District’s ground water remains depleted. It takes years of normal rainfall for the aquifer to recover. They encourage voluntary conservation.
