June 21, 2017
 
Members in attendance: Don, Julie, Mary, Cameron, Heather, Brenda, Mike, Ken, Karen, Charlie, Julie, Ralph, Franziska.  Guests: Ben from Freedom Rotary Club and Shannon Calden from SLVMS.
 
President Karen opened the meeting with the flag salute, introductions and Thought for the Day.
 
Announcements: Karen gave us a great summary of the Rotary Convention. President also read thank you notes from the three scholarship recipients. Roast and Toast is Thursday, June 22 in Morgan Hill. Call Karen if you would like to go. We will be working at the 4th of July Parade in Boulder Creek. There will be a BBQ at Joe and Linda’s that afternoon. The RYLA BBQ is being held at Mission Springs this Thursday at 5:00. August 21 is the New Teacher Breakfast. Sign-ups next week. Sue will coordinate.
 
Guest Speaker: Shannon Calden, Principal of SLVMS
Shannon grew up in Arizona, attended the University of Santa Clara and just completed her first year as principal of SLVHS. Seven years ago, Shannon was hired by the district to be the new principal of SLVE.
 
Shannon shared how the Four Way Test makes sense to a middle school student. She talked about a typical middle school schedule and math intervention. In addition, there are 55 kids in 6th grade band and 75 kids in the 7th and 8th grade band. She is building a choir program and Will Guilford produces an annual MS musical each year. There is a life skills course at the MS and kids can take a foreign language. Shannon said the MS is helping to support students’ adjustment to middle schools with the WEB (Where Everyone Belongs) program. Shannon is also looking to build an afterschool program that develops student interests. SLVMS students are encouraged to be involved in community service and 85 students raised $12,000 for Relay for Life—one dollar at a time!! The MS’s Winter Carnival raised $9000 for Valley Churches.
 
Shannon has three children in the Valley and her husband is the high school principal. It is obvious that Shannon Calden is very committed to her community! 
 
Detective: Karen informed us that there is a lady in the US with a 35’ waist! What??
