President Linda opened the meeting with Rotary’s Four Way Test, introductions, and the Thought for the Day.
Announcements: PLEASE ATTEND - Sept 29 SLV Rotary is co-sponsoring an event at Highlands - John Laird will be speaking at noon about the ballot propositions; Sept 17 at SV Rotary lunch - Mark Stone at 12:15; Quail Hollow painting project on Sunday, Sept 16; Ralph is inviting us over on Thursday, Sept 20 6:00 potluck; District Governor is visiting on Sept 26; Oct 9 Kaiser Arena Rotarian Social- $5 bring family and friends; Oct 13 Barrel Wrap in Watsonville 7:30 am; Avenues of Service on Oct 4 at the Biltmore in SJ.
- We will be sponsoring a student to attend the Rotaract Convention in Portland.
Guest speaker: Don Boys, California Invention Convention, Patent agent for students
Don graduated from Purdue University with a BS degree in Mechanical Engineering, He worked in Aerospace Engineering, was with General Motors developing robotic and automatic processing equipment, developed automated vacuum systems and magnetically-enhanced sputtering equipment for Varian Associates. He founded Iodep Engineering and moved into the Intellectual property world in 1988. He has been practicing patent law for over 25 years. He says he is not a scientist (or an attorney) but is a firm believer that we need more scientists in the world.
Elementary students participating in the Invention Convention often have a life changing experience. Training teachers on how to keep notebooks and put on an invention show takes time and he is hoping that this program will move up to middle school and high school. Don is excited about his work with older students at Anzar High School and hopes they will be involved in the future. President Linda shared that SLVMS has an Invention Convention elective that her grandson is teaching.
Don is a member of the Rotary Club of San Juan Batista. As a child he had infantile paralysis (Polio) and has made a personal commitment to support Polio International.
Detective: Good grief; don’t let Joe go on any more trips! He quizzed us on the geography of countries surrounding the Baltic Sea and it was tough.
