Today our speaker was Tim Brattan of Grey Bears.  Grey Bears was started in 1973 by two UCSC students who recognized nutrition requirements for the elderly poor in Santa Cruz county were not being met.  Today Grey Bears distributes about 1.7 million pounds of produce and 685,000 pounds of day-old bread annually.  In addition they provide 40,000 hot meals per year, both breakfast and lunch.  They're about the only recycling operation left in the county with facilities at the Ben Lomond transfer station and their headquarters on Chanticleer.   Tim said that volunteers contribute 85,000 hours per year.  Their thrift shop operation maintains 2nd Saturday Half-off days.
