Minutes of Rotary Club of SLV
July 20, 2016

Members in attendance: Judy, Don, Janet, Linda, Joe, Julie, Eric, Mary, Cameron, Heather, Steve, Ken, Karen, Carol, Brenda, Charlie, and Ralph. Guests: none

President Karen opened the meeting with the flag salute, introductions and Thought for the Day.

Announcements: Membership Workshop on August 27; District Designated Funds workshop on August 20, Area 7 Mixer on August 29 at Bruno’s- heavy hors devours for $5, Match Polio Now is asking every donate $50 to raise $1.6 million. The Gates Foundation will match it, and last year, Match Polio Now raised $800,000.

Detective: Cameron gave us our morning wake up call with a quick quiz of random trivia. Overall, the Rotarians were excellent guessers. We are all aware that we must skip the ice cream with our cherry pie in Georgia, half the club is prohibited from skydiving in Florida on Sundays, and that swearing in front of a corpse is both rude and illegal! (Where does Cameron find this stuff?)

Club Assembly
  • Karen said she spoke to the owners of the restaurant and we could be moved inside during stormy weather.
  • There was a suggestion to mix both marbles and jokers for the drawing. This year, the club made over $3000 in the drawing. Club agreed that President Karen could decide when to switch between the two.
  • Governor will be visiting on October 26. His wife is asking that each student in kindergarten and first grade be given a book. There are 20 classrooms in SLV and approximately 375 students. This appears to be cost prohibitive ($11 x 375). We discussed buying a book for each classroom or buying children a ruler stamped with our name on it. Karen will bring our feedback to the next Area 7 meeting.
  • Karen asked all members to read Ten Reasons to Love Rotary in this month’s Rotarian.
  • Heather suggested an evening meeting here in the tap-room. Mary asked that each member submit a new member name so that she can contact him or her.

Drawing: “D#@!! it,” squealed President Karen. She did not find the joker—only ten cards to go!!

The meeting was adjourned at 8:25 am.
