Meeting 5/4/2016

President Mike opened the meeting with the flag salute, introductions and Thought for the Day.

 

Announcements: Janet gave us an update on the District Conference; Sam Farr roast on Friday night; Don told us about last Sunday’s work day at MCR and the Felton Community Hall; Ken shared plans for the Redwood Mountain Fair. Our main job will be road control and coffee service on Sunday morning; Next week’s Club Assembly will focus on the Redwood Mountain Fair; the scholarship committee will meet after next week’s meeting.

 

Detective: In honor of Mothers Day, Karen entertained us with the questions from her book Ladies from the Kitchen and TV Moms.

 

Guest Speaker: Lance Linares, Executive Director of Santa Cruz Community Foundation

Lance has been with the Community Foundation for 21. Community Foundations started in the US in 1914. California has almost 30 community foundations with the Silicon Valley being the largest foundation in the California ($9.2B). SCCF started with people raising funds for families hit by the 1982 floods. In 1995, SCCF had $6M in assets, and in the last 10 years, grew to $100M. The Foundation offers trainings for all aspects of fundraising and helps individuals establish charitable giving, endowments and grants. The Foundation’s job is to help people make Santa Cruz County a better place to live. Lance shared that there are two funds set up specifically for the San Lorenzo Valley. In 2010, the Foundation built a new facility in Aptos. Here, they are able to offer space for meetings and trainings for non-profits in the county. Each year the foundation gives away between $5M and 6M, though one year they gave away $13M. Education and improving math proficiency in our schools is another area of focus and the Foundation is supporting 5 organizations in our county. In addition, the Foundation has pulled higher education and business partners together to offer internships for local students. Lance encouraged the club to visit the SCCF website.
