Minutes of Rotary Club of SLV
April 19, 2017
 
Members in attendance: Don, Laurie, Linda, Joe, Julie, Mary, Cameron, Heather, Charlie, Ken, Karen, Ralph, Carol, Sue, Franziska.  Guests: Rick and Yolanda from MCR.
 
President Karen opened the meeting with the flag salute, introductions and Thought for the Day.
 
Announcements: Santa Cruz Children’s Museum has asked that all of the Rotary Clubs participate in a Rotary Day at Abbott Square. Karen will discuss at the next board meeting. Karen reminded us that every Rotarian registers for the District Conference. You have to sign up even if you don’t plan to eat. Nov. 10 there will be an African Art exhibit at 41st Ave. The Invention Convention is taking place at Harbor High on April 29. It is open to the public at 12:45. SLV High is preforming Grease starting on April 22. Gil has asked Charlie to continue the license plate sales at Ernie’s. Today Charlie brought in $130 from the sales!
 
Karen and Cameron gave us a brief rundown on the District Assembly.
 
Guest Speaker: Rick Becker, Program Manager for MCR
 
New to this position, Rick went to SJSU and had a career in nursing before receiving a graduate degree from USF. He has two grown children and five grandchildren. Rick said MCR’s goal is to develop a happier and safer SLV. He is identifying gaps in the needs of individuals in the Valley. MCR is part of Community Bridges that includes four (geographical located) resource centers, food distribution and nutritional education, parent education, summer and after school activities for children. Together in the Park is a program that takes place every Wed. from 10:30-12:30. It includes Positive Parenting, healthy snacks and kids activities. Food distribution is every Thursday from 11:00-12:00 and it is held outside the building in Felton. CERT training is also offered through MCR. There is no charge for CERT training. Advocates are available to help people who need counseling or those who don’t have health coverage. Rick invited the Rotarians to come and volunteer or just come and see some of the programs they are offering.
 
Detective: Cameron took us down a seedy path with these questions. Surprisingly, the Rotarians knew most of the answers!
