Guest speaker: Roaring Camp’s owner, Melani Clark
Roaring Camp has been in the Valley for over 50 years. Her dad had a love of trains, and in the 1950s, he was looking for an area where he could preserve this important part of American history. He arrived in Santa Cruz and walked the tracks from Santa Cruz to Felton. He knew he found the area where he could  give people the unique experience of riding a train.

Today there are only a few people that know how to operate and work on these trains. When something breaks, the crew most often has to make new parts for the train. Melani Clark recognized how great her staff is and gives them full credit for the success of Roaring Camp.

Today, we recognized long time employee, Tom Shreve. Tom has been an engineer at Roaring Camp for 44 years. He is a machinist and runs the trains and is a mentor to many of the younger staff members. Part of his job is being a steward and knowing when something is wrong with one of the engines and how to fix it. Tom is the interface between the trains and the public. He engages the public and shares Roaring Camp’s history with his passengers. Tom credits three “old timers” with sharing their experiences with him, and in turn, he is sharing it with others.

Carole presented Tom with a certificate of appreciation and Rafael presented him with a $100 gift certificate to Casa Nostra. Tom graciously accepted the gift and shared a few stories with the group.

Drawing: Teresa won $5.
