President Linda opened the meeting with Rotary’s Four Way Test, introductions, and the Thought for the Day. Yippee—Today we welcomed Judi Sherman into the club!

Guest speaker: Lyndsey Marks, Development Director, Court Appointed Special Advocates
Annually, 500 children experience foster care in Santa Cruz County because of neglect or abuse in the home. 160 children have a CASA and 30 are on the waiting list for a CASA. Currently several on the waiting list are between 0 and 3 years. There is a big need for Spanish/English speaking advocates. The primary job is to meet with the child each week. The CASA talks to all of the people in the child’s life (teacher, parent, therapist, attorney, social worker, tutor, etc.) and makes recommendations to the court. Research has found that foster children with a CASA are: more stable, do better in school, are more likely to be adopted, less likely to return to the system. The state’s high school graduation rate for foster youth is 50%-- the Santa Cruz CASA graduation rate is 84%. Advocates go through 35 hours of training and become a consistent force in a child’s life. There is a video on their website that you can share with others. Nominate and donate to CASA!
CASA is always looking for volunteers to be advocates for children. This is an opportunity to support children and make a difference in their life.
