Our speaker today was Emily Muscatel, daughter of member Julie Haff. Emily has lived all over the world and she talked today about a recent trip to India.

President Karen opened the meeting with the flag salute, introductions and Thought for the Day.
Announcements: Last night’s AED training was fantastic, though only 2 parents attended – we have another training tomorrow night at BCE. Be there at 4:15 and encourage others to attend. Scotts Valley Rotary is hosting a Lacy J Dalton concert on April 28. Jimmy Panetta will be speaking at the Sunrise Club in early 2018. Rotaract is sponsoring Big Heroes, Big Acts on Feb 24. They are looking for donations for the raffle. Our Rotary Speech contest is on Feb 14. We are hosting the Area 7 contest, held at the SLV Theater at 5:30 on Mar 6. Don’t forget, we are collecting socks and gloves for MCR. Sixty Rotarians lost their homes in the Napa fire. Karen has suggested we have a little fundraiser on Nov 29. There will be a workday at the Riverside Homeless Shelter. The International Convention is in Toronto and in 2019 it’s in Germany.
Guest Speaker: Emily Thiagaraj - India, International Adoptions and the Rotary Club of Mumbai
Emily traveled to India to stay with her law partner, Alison, during her 3-month visit to India. Alison and her husband were there to adopt a child from an Indian orphanage. There are over 30 million orphans in India- many of these children are placed in orphanges (others live on the streets) after being separated from their families in the cities. The US allows fewer than 5,500 international adoptions each year.
Emily shared pictures of her bike tour through Mumbai and her visit with some of her husband’s family. She also attended a Rotaract meeting with her college friend who is a member of the rotary Club of Mumbai. Rotaract students put on a skit about noise pollution (cars, horns honking, loud voices in public places, etc) in Mumbai. Emily encourages Rotarians to visit India if they have the opportunity to do so.
Detective: Who knew that Canada was the first country to celebrate Thanksgiving? Judy, that's who!!
Drawing: Bob was lucky enough to have his ticket drawn, but unfortunately, he could not find the joker!!
The meeting was adjourned at 8:20 am, with a brief meeting of the past presidents immediately following the regular meeting.
