Today's guests and speakers were 5170 District Governor Jeff Orth and Barbara Orth. Barbara presented this year's DG Partner's Project "Read Me a Picture". The mission of the project is to promote visual literacy, vocabulary development and art appreciation, as well as opportunity to exercise a child's imagination - through book ownership.
Member Cameron made quite an impression on our District Governor with his impeccable sense of style.

Minutes of Rotary Club of SLV
October 26, 2016
Members in attendance: Judy, Don, Laurie, Janet, Linda, Joe, Julie, Mary, Cameron, Heather, Steve, Karen, Carol, Brenda, Charlie, Ralph, and Franziska. Guests: Governor Jeff Ortho, Assistant Governor Donna Maurrillo, and Barbara Ortho.
President Karen opened the meeting with the flag salute, introductions and Thought for the Day.
Announcements: Karen and Ralph gave a quick summary of the Avenues of Service. Thank you from Mt. Parks for supporting the annual Lobster Feed. Wreath sale in Florida—Janet sent an email. Sandra Young, from the Fremont Club, has rooms for the Rotary International Convention in Atlanta. Please contact her if you are interested in attending. This year’s speech contest is being held at the Aquarium on May 5. The District Conference is being held on May 6 and 7 at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk.
Detective: Brenda gave us a short quiz on the history of US voting and the club passed with flying colors—red, white and blue, of course!
Guest Speaker: Governor Jeff Orth, Rotary Serving Humanity
First, Jeff recognized the board with Stinking Rose pins. He shared that sixteen years ago, Jeff was invited to the Gilroy Rotary meeting and joined because he was interested in doing community service. Six months later he went to a meeting in Salinas where Jeff heard the story of a man who had been given the gift of a Rotary sponsored cleft pallet surgery. The room was touched by the man’s story and Jeff said that was the moment he became a true Rotarian. His first Rotary trip to Monterey, Mexico, helped to seal his passion for International Service.
Jeff complimented our club on our many projects and asked us to consider working to grow our membership. He also said wearing a Rotary pin helps to show the world that we are one of the helpers. Jeff shared the quote, “Success is when you look on your life and the memories make you smile.” Jeff passed out coins to recognize individual member’s contribution to Rotary International.
Jeff’s motto -- attract the young, get more done and have fun! Barbara Orth shared her book project with the club. More information can be found on the area website.
