7:55am            Speaker today, Mike Rotkin, Coastal Watershed Council
  • Mike Rotkin, former mayor of Santa Cruz, former councilman of Santa Cruz, former lecturer at UCSC, former motorcycle mechanic is current board member at Coastal Watershed Council.  Mike’s presentation was very well received, especially with the recently established project of the San Lorenzo River Alliance.  A primary goal of the Alliance is to bring the San Lorenzo River back into public use.  As an initial phase, the Alliance is focusing on the lower River within the Santa Cruz City limits.  As progress is made the group will move “up the river”.  As a result of Corps of Engineers “repairs and improvements” over the year to address flooding problems in the city, the city has turned its back on the river and in fact prohibits any recreational use of its waters.  Pollution is a huge problem and must be dealt with.  See www.sanlorenzoriver.org.  Mike has agreed to present to the club in the future on the accomplishments of the Alliance and the Coastal Watershed Council.
