The Cost of Inheritance

Katy Besile is an attorney who will share her experience assisting the Founders of the Reparations Project with one of the personal stories featured in "The Cost of Inheritance: an America ReFramed Special" which premiered on PBS on January 8 and which was screened on March 12 at 7pm at the Guild Theater in Menlo Park. The documentary explores the legacy of systemic inequitites in the United States, tracing the intertwined histories of descentdants of enslaved persons and slave owners and delving into their efforts to bridge divides and seek reparations together.

The Reparations Project was founded to fight property disputes for the heirs of formerly enslaved peoples and fight the horrific trend of Black land loss via eminent omain. Among other initiatives, the Reparations Project also supports Black education and Black art. In that effort, they now support of 25 scholars arcross the country, including some for the Bay Area they easist Black families with tax payments to preserve land ownership, support Black farmers, and are curating an innovative enslavement era art exhibit for museums accross the country.
