January 24, 2018 – Our club presented sleeping bags and personal hygiene care packets to Tayischa Delridge, Community Manager at Ravenswood Family Health Center. The center has an excellent program where their team goes out to the homeless in East Palo Alto every Thursday and distribute medication. The sleeping bags and care packets will be handed out during their rounds. Thank you to our fellow club members for participating in the distribution: Court, Jenny, Elizabeth, Mike, and Ramesh.
January 19, 2018 -- Sleeping bags were presented to Street Life Ministries in Redwood City, a non-profit service organization in Redwood City that serves hot meals, clothing, etc. to the homeless in San Mateo County. Beth, Helen, Jenny, Mike, Ramesh, Elizabeth, and Sobha participated in this distribution. We were fortunate to work with two Rotarians from the Peninsula Sunrise Rotary Club who are also volunteers in this organization - Vicky and Bonnie. Bonnie talked to us about the programs they have for the homeless and at-risk in the county.

January 15, 2018 -- Organized by our partner Youth Community Services (YCS), the "MLK Jr Day of Service" was well attended by local service minded citizens. Held at the Palo Alto Mitchell Park Community Center, the day was filled with spirit featuring live music, a celebration of youth led service projects and much more. The Rotary Club of East Palo Alto Bayshore joined the many community service organizations such as Project Safety Net, Outlet Youth, Neighbor Helping Neighbor, Aim High, the King Papers Project at Stanford University and Stanford’s Muslim Student Union. At our table, there was a constant stream of attendees curious about our mission. Staffed by Beth Weisberg, Ravi and Amy Menon, Helen Hymes, and Todd Armstrong, our Rotarians enthusiastically explained our commitment to East Palo Alto highlighting our work with youth, seniors, the less fortunate and the environment. Best of all, seven individuals signed up to find out more and possibly attend our weekly meetings, among them students to whom we pledged to engage in East Palo Alto community efforts.
January 4, 2018 -- Charlsie Chang was our speaker this evening. She is a Community Outreach Fellow at Peninsula Clean Energy.
Peninsula Clean Energy (PCE) is a joint program of the San Mateo County and all its cities to help meet local climate action goals. It provides cleaner electricity at lower rates to almost all San Mateo County residents, businesses, and institutions. Peninsula Clean Energy works in partnership with PG&E, which continues to maintain the electrical grid, provide customer billing, and administer energy efficiency and discount programs. After one year of full countywide operations, Peninsula Clean Energy expects to save East Palo Alto residents $329,000 on their electricity bills. Countywide, electric customers will save about $17 million and avoid 680 million pounds of greenhouse gas emissions. Residents, businesses and public institutions all automatically benefit from their share of savings. Meanwhile, large public agencies such as school districts will reap significant savings.
January 18, 2018 -- Our guest speaker was Franko Morales - Photography: Tips and Tricks for the New Digital World. He is a longtime resident of San Jose and worked in the social welfare area for a numbers of years. He talked about his life-changing trip to Italy which triggered his passion for photography. During the talk, he mainly focused on three aspects: 1) Who is a photographer? Here he discussed the reasons we take pictures and the tools and software that are available to make good photographs. 2) Technical vs. Creative Photography. The technical aspects are the camera settings, exposure, lighting, etc. The creative components are the subject matter, energy, emotions, etc. 3) The Story – the photograph conveys a story as a picture is worth a thousand words.
