Rotary Club of Eagan Honors
Public Safety Officers of the Year
The Rotary Club of Eagan celebrated the exceptional service and dedication of two local public safety professionals during its annual Public Safety Officer Recognition Program held Wednesday, October 7, at Lost Spur Golf and Event Center in Eagan. The longstanding tradition recognizes outstanding police officers and firefighters whose leadership, professionalism, and commitment to serving others make a lasting difference in the community.
Eagan Police Officer Ryan Winegardner was recognized as the 2026 Police Officer of the Year for his proactive approach to law enforcement, exceptional judgment, and dedication to public safety. Joining the Eagan Police Department in 2021 through the Pathways to Policing program, Winegardner has distinguished himself as one of the department's most dedicated officers and has served in numerous specialized roles, including the Honor Guard, Crime Scene Technician, Active Shooter Team, Field Training Officer, and certified Drug Recognition Evaluator. His newest assignment is with the department's K-9 Unit where he and his partner Lloyd are completing specialized training and are expected to begin patrolling Eagan's streets later this month. Known for his professionalism, positive attitude and willingness to step forward whenever needed, Winegardner consistently exemplifies the department's mission to serve with honor, protect with courage, and lead with excellence.
Eagan Firefighter Drew Schmitt received the 2026 Firefighter of the Year Award in recognition of his outstanding leadership, work ethic and commitment to strengthening the department. Although he joined the Eagan Fire Department in February 2025, Schmitt has already made a significant impact through his dedication and willingness to go above and beyond. Schmitt has played a central role in strengthening the department's Respiratory Protection Program helping establish sustainable procedures and training to ensure the program's long-term effectiveness. He also serves as an EMT with the Eagan Police Department's SWAT Team and is the lead instructor for the department's training academy this fall. Respected by colleagues and supervisors alike, Schmitt is recognized for his approachable personality, team-first mentality and ability to identify opportunities for improvement and take the initiative to make meaningful changes. Outside the fire department, his dedication and discipline are equally evident, having completed several Ironman races.
