What a great meeting this week.  Besides our speaker we had Jan Pierce from Engle & Volkers Realty, guest of Brad Hunt.  We met in the Light House Room with a great turkey meal and great conversation.  The weather also helped with the time since it was in the 40s outside and sunny.

President Jacki opened the meeting and she is feeling much better.

A couple of dates need to be mentioned:
  • Polar Plunge is set for this Saturday, February 9th and the temperature will be above freezing, but not in the water.  Pledges can be made on the District Website.
  • Peace & Understanding Dinner is planned for Thursday, February 28th.  Cost is $45.00 and has always been a great evening to attend.  Registrations for this event can also be done on the District Site.
Have you checked out the District website lately?????  There is a wealth of information about what is going on close to home and beyond.

Rotary International has announced the Rotary Theme for this next year. "Rotary Connects The World" .  Surely we will be hearing more about this soon.

Ed Hardiman, Ph.D. Speaker

Edward Hardiman, PH.D., St. Johns Prep Headmaster, was our speaker this week.  Headmaster Ed gave some history on St. John's Prep and it's leadership.  It has been focusing on academics since 1907, located on Summer Street in Danvers.  The Prep has come a long way over the years.  Recently has grown to include boys in grades 6 to 8, allowing students to enroll and complete their middle school years as well as their high school years, preparing them for college or university years.  While the school is a Catholic Educational Organization, it encourages all faiths to enroll in the program.  The school offers many clubs as part of the students educational experience.  Partnerships are a big part of the process, connecting them to the community.  I know they have helped us with students volunteering in the Y's after-school program, as assistants with homework help and activities.  Also in recent years the school has worked to build their endowment to allow them to offer additional financial assistance to make the school available to more students.  Presently there are 1,150 students grades 9 to 12 and 320 students in grades 6 to 8.  Great speaker with information about this local institution.

Sheriff Brad collected $81.00

Most of the group contributed to the campership fund for the following reasons:
Many for the Patriots Win last Sunday.
   Some for the great weather.
Some for the successful Y Winter Dance Fundraiser last Saturday.
Others for a variety of things.
 Thank you to all.....................

Speaker next week I believe will be someone from the town.

There will not be a meeting on Presidents Day, February 18th.

Now for the card game this week.  Me, Lenny had his number pulled and I was a loooooooooooooser.  I then pulled the next number for the game and it was another one of my ticket numbers.  Boy was I excited and again was a loooooooooooooser.  So I am not just a loooooser in the game of cards but I am a double looooooooooooooooooser.  I guess pay back is expected.

Well have a great weekend and we will see you next week.

Lenny

Great table conversations, fantastic food and some great Rotary shared stories.  That was my take on today’s meeting.  The table I sat at had some interesting football discussions.  Dan, Rick, Jen and Brian were talking it up about the Patriots and this upcoming Super Bowl.  Dan had a great idea of moving Gillette Stadium to Boston.  Gary updated us on the AFC pool and how much money the club raised.  The other table seemed to be enjoying themselves with lots of laughter.  I won a loaf of bread in the raffle and shared half with Rick.  Just an FYI – I took my half home and ate half of my half with dinner.  Best bread evah…

Great meeting this week.  Nice company, great conversations and great speaker.  Past President Matt opened the meeting and we enjoyed a great meal with each other.
Dates and things to remember:
  • Fall Winter Raffle - Becky is looking for members to turn in the funds from sold tickets and if you have tickets and know you are not going to sell them, she would like them turned in so she can get them to those that need them.  There are only 500 tickets for the raffle where the winner will enjoy an evening with the Bruins, great overnight in Boston and a wonderful meal for the couple.  For $10 a chance, the odds are unbelievable.
  • Coat Collection for those in need - Shelley is again collecting coats through the Home for the Deaf, with our help.  Collection boxes are at North Shore Bank, Salem Five, YMCA and the Home for the Deaf.  New or look like new coats are needed for the drive. Coats will be given to local families and the Salvation Army.
  • Dictionary Project is back on line.  Dictionaries have arrived and Sarah is ready to go. Check the Rotary Calendar on the website at www.danversrotary.org for dates and times.  This is a great project to take part in.  Every third grader in Danvers receives a dictionary and we get the opportunity to see how much they appreciate them with we give them out.
  • District Unsung Hero Dinner - This Thursday, our nominee Cheryl James will receive the Unsung Hero award.  Event is sold out and we have a table of Danvers Rotarians attending.
  • Collections for Eliminating Polio and the Polar Plunge - Mary Beth, Jackie and Johnie will be taking the plunge for our club and are looking for pledges.  Each week building up to the plunge a collection can will be on each table to collect spare change and any other donations.

Past District Governor Dave Gardner Presentation

We were delighted to have Past District Governor Dave Gardner with us this week.  During his rein leading our District, Dave made challenges to each club on Membership and Fundraising.  This week he presented two citations to Past President Bill for the club's commitment to raising funds for the Foundation and for the hard work put into recruiting new members to the club.

Membership is and will continue to be a priority for Rotary and all service clubs.  While we are doing well at recruiting members we need to continue with our efforts.

Speaker - Leslie Gould - Greater Beverly Chamber of Commerce

Leslie Gould, new head of the Great Beverly Chamber of Commerce was this week's guest speaker.  As everyone is aware, Leslie replaced John Somes when John left the Chamber to replace me, Lenny, as CEO of the YMCA.  Prior to taking over the Beverly Chamber she led the Lynn Chamber for 10 years following a 9 year term with the Marblehead Chamber.

Between 70 to 80 businesses from Danvers belong to the Greater Beverly Chamber, Rotary being one and Leslie has some great ideas on strengthening the Chamber.  As in information hub and clearing house they have so much to offer the businesses that take membership in the organization.  Membership cost for small businesses is about $300 a year.  A great resource for small businesses as they are connected to other like businesses.  A couple of areas she will work on getting elected officials to host forums and beginning a Gift Certificate program for the Chamber that will encourage people to purchase items from the businesses connected to the Greater Beverly Chamber.  She will continue work on Business after hours and will be attending some of our meetings as she is now a Beverly Rotarian.

MEMBERSHIP CHALLENGE

Past President Matt presented this year's Membership Challenge and how it will work.  The club members are being placed into four teams that will work to bring in new members to the club.  A guest from a team member will earn 3 points for the team, if a guest becomes a member the team will receive 10 points.  Points will be counted and the team with the most points as of Martin Luther King Day will receive a special prize.  Matt will be sending out emails relative to this, with details.  Until that time here is the breakdown of the teams and their leaders.
Boomers led by Suzanne Contreas and Brian Ahern include Len Mercier, Larry DeLorenzo, Becky Kilborn, Barry Kaplan, Neal Waldman, Don Desmond, Sheryl Meehan and Ted Speliotis.  Nesters led by MaryBeth O'Connell and Gary Nangle include Judy DeLorenzo, Sean Driscoll, Shelley Silverman, Jen Breaker, Dan Doherty, John Zannino and Jason Alain.   WD's led by Brad Hunt and Bill Nolan includeJohn Somes, Jim Jezowski and Matt Schroder.  WM's led by Jacki Shambaugh and Annelie Sirois include Sara D'Antonio, Kim LaBonte Kay and Chelsea Rosato.
Surely more information will be sent to each member from Matt, but this is the breakdown and get ready to build membership.  If your name was not listed you can help the team of your choice.  We need to look beyond just our business associates and friends.  Think about those you see at meetings, those you share time with at church, etc.  Everyone should have the chance to become a Rotarian.

Cards were play this week by Annelie was a looooooser, Becky won a Joker, Dan won a loaf of bread, Speaker Leslie Gould won a loaf of bread along with Larry Raimondi.  Thank you Brian for baking the three loafs of bread.

We will not be meeting on Monday, November 12th, in honor of Veteran's Day and for all who have served our great country.

That's it for this week.  See you soon.

Lenny

What a great time we had at Rotary this week.  The youth from Ireland, with the Friends Forever Program, were visiting this week.  Robert and Sarah sat at my table and we enjoyed our conversations with them over lunch.  What a wonderful lunch it was; turkey, stuffing, squash, mashed potatoes, soup, salad and a great desert.  Felt more like Thanksgiving than Halloween week.

On a sad note, Ted Speliotis,s mom passed away this week.  Please keep Ted's family in your thoughts and prayers.

Polar Plunge is fast approaching.  Have you considered sponsoring our Rotarians that are doing the big plunge.  Johnie, Mary Beth and Jacki are all taking the big dip to raise funds for Polio with all the other District Clubs.  You can contact them yourselves or you can goto the District site and pledge your support.  Usually we are trying to force the President but this year we are proud to have 3 Danvers Rotarians represented in the District Event.

The Fundraising Raffle is underway for great seats at a Bruins game, an overnight stay in Boston and a great meal in the city as well.  If you have not received your tickets, Becky Kilborn is handing out tickets and collecting funds.  Very important that we have strong participation to make this a success.  Tickets are reasonable and easy to sell.

Have any slightly used or new coats you can contribute to those in need.  Shelly is heading up a Coat Drive again, through the Home for the Deaf and Rotary is again helping with the collection.  Coats can be dropped off at the Y, Salem Five, NorthShore Bank and other locations in town.  Don't have any coats, Shelly is also collecting donations $5 or $10 goes a long wan to purchase coats for those in need.  Collected coats will be distributed local and through the Salvation Army.  Have to tell you the Salvation Army is a great organization.  They helped out with great support for families following the Blast in the Port Area, years ago.  They were wonderful.

Did you purchase tickets for the Comedy Show that we had to cancel.  Hopefully you received your refund for purchased tickets.  If you or anyone you know did not receive a refund please let Jacki know so it can be taken care of.

Dictionary Project ran into a bit of a snag as the dictionaries did not arrive in time for the first distribution date.  Sara will reschedule that school for a future date and it will be announced.  Gary was checking on Monday as to when they would arrive.  This is a great program where we give a dictionary to every third grader in town, to keep as their own.  It is so exciting to see their appreciation for these and the teachers love having each child with their own.  Even with computers in use so much today it is important for children to know how to look up words and learn correct spelling and all the information each word brings to our language.

On Thursday this week the Unsung Hero Awards will be handed out, by the District, at the Sheraton in Wakefield.  Our club nominated Cheryl James and she has been selected.  Danvers Rotary purchased a table and I believe there was one seat available as of Monday's meeting.

This week's program was the visit from the Friends Forever Young Adults from Ireland.  This group of ten teens were quite impressive with their understanding of each other and their concern to help with building friendships with others of other faiths than their own.  The teens spend an entire year with the program.  Some time is spent meeting and working together prior to their visit here in America.  They spend two weeks here in America, learning about each other and spending a great deal of time meeting others and seeing how people get along here.  When they return they will spend the rest of their year meeting and sharing their experiences.  The hope is that they will be the leaders of tomorrow and be able to help create a better understanding of everyone and how people need to work together for peace.  Darren and Bethany were the leaders from Ireland, (returned for a second year), and Sophie was the American leader who drives the group around in a Danvers Ford Van.  Presently there are three groups, one in Maine and two in New Hampshire.  The home base for the program is in Durham New Hampshire with a farm house next door to house the youth.  There are now 1,700 alumni that have been through the program since it's beginning.  Over this past summer there were 5 groups in the program.
The pictures above include a picture of the entire group, a picture of Robert and Sarah presenting some gifts to President Jacki for our hosting them today and the bottom check is President Jacki presenting Chelsea, from Friends Forever, with a check for $2,000 in support of the program.

Rick Gilmore gave an overview of the program as he sits on the Friends Forever Board.
Great Program, Great Teens and Fun Day.

Sheriff Brad was busy collecting today.

An evening meeting is being planned for November 14th.  Details to follow.

Cards were played by Barry and Brian - Both were looooooooooooooooooooooooosers.

Guest Speaker:  Gretchen Detora, children’s author.
Today we had the opportunity to learn more about Gretchen Detora, a local children’s author.  Gretchen is a wife, mother, author of children’s stories and an Instructional Assistant at South Elementary School in Andover, MA.  As an author, Gretchen writes her children’s stories with the intention of inspiring others to find positive solutions in everyday life.  This has been Gretchen’s focus in her own life as well.  While raising her son Ryan, she taught him the importance of giving back to others and how just one person can make a difference in the world.  Gretchen also brings this important message to her students at South Elementary School.  It is her hope that the positive messages in her stories will reach many more.  This is Gretchen’s first book, which she self-published through Mascot Books.
The book Gretchen brought in today, “Dave and Danny Pay It Forward” is dedicated to the memory of David Vaughan, who died in an automobile accident in September of 2013.  The story is about a dad who lead by example, was involved in the community as well as a loving dad, husband and mentor.  Money raised from the book goes to a trust fund in David’s name for his three children.

GUEST SPEAKER – Dr. Al Tataranus

Great conversation today on stress and taking control your life.  Dr. Al is a past Rotarian and has spent most of his 92 years of his life helping people deal with stress.  Attended a number of colleges and universities including:  Lowell College, Harvard University and Boston University.  He has been married most of his life and has a Pony Tail in honor of his wife who passed away 9 years ago.
Dr. Al had a number of stories and jokes that he shared with us.  Stories of his life and suggestions on how to cope with certain situations.
Dr. Al discussed 3 ways to control stress.
  1.       Live in the present.  The past is in the past and the you have little control of the future and its unknown.
  2.       Don’t be resentful.
  3.       Like being yourelf and who you are.  Sometimes this can take a long time but if you do it correctly – it will be a wonderful journey.  Don’t feel inferior.

Mr. Bartha also updated us on commercial and residential zoning rates.  The possibility of Hayrides at Endicott Park, the Red Barn restoration, and expanding the bike path into Middleton.  Other topics included affordable housing within the community and if it’s possible.  Sandy Beach at Danversport is being reviewed for upgrades and making it more community friendly with a splash pad, kayak rentals and redesign.
The Town Manager is the Chief Executive Officer for the Town of Danvers and serves at the pleasure of the Board of Selectmen. The position was created in 1949 , with the adoption of the Town Manager Act, and provides leadership and administrative oversight to all departments, except for Library and Schools. The current Town Manager, Steve Bartha, was hired in December of 2014.
The Town Manager is responsible for the enforcement of all laws and Town ordinances, the appointment of department heads and many Town boards and committees, and the submission of the annual budget to the Board of Selectmen.  In addition, the Town Manger and his staff recommend policies and programs to the Board of Selectmen and implement decisions of the Board, as well as Town Meeting.  The Assistant Town Manager oversees purchasing, legal, insurance and customer service functions, and provides administrative oversight to the IT Director.
