I love audio-visual aids and last week we had one of the best: the remodeled ambulance used to bring needed sustenance and comfort to the EMTs. fire fighters, police and sheriff's officers responding to local catastrophic events. At the conclusion of his interesting presentation, Rotarian Jim Brady invited members to take a hands-tour of the HART (Helping Area Response Teams) vehicle refurbished with funds raised by Dexter Rotary and other local community organizations. Thanks to Jim and also to Phil Zepeda for bringing us yet another outstanding program.
We knew that our golf outing event chairs were great and the numbers prove it: The First Annual Phil Zepeda Invitational raised $9,300 - that's almost DOUBLE their income goal!
Heartfelt thanks are extended to our event chairs Matt Copeland and Keith Krings, the golf outing committee, our many sponsors, golfers and volunteers. The event was outstanding from beginning to end and we are grateful to our friends who supported this inaugural golf outing.
Tomorrow's presentation is on a subject that is near and dear to my heart. The Michigan War Dog Memorial is about a mile from our home and just 3/4 of a mile away from my work. I have watched volunteers dig and clear away decades of debris and the end result is a beautiful cemetery honoring those who have served our country and its citizens domestically and internationally.
Experience has taught me that the War Dog Memorial is something that needs to be seen to be appreciated. I am offering you two opportunities to learn more about this project in addition to bringing Phil to meet you on Thursday. First, I am willing to take any and all members and family members on a personal tour. The second option is to view this recent story by Channel 4 which provides a wonderful introduction to the MWDM:
At our June 3, we had the pleasure of meeting two students and their teachers who are working with the A2W club on a volunteer/educational voyage to visit Grace Care Center in Trincomalee, Sri Lanka.
Over the past 2 years at the Washtenaw Alliance for Virtual Education, the Rotary of Ann Arbor West has collaborated with the program for their project "Hope Rising". The project includes local students helping the girls living at Grace. The orphanage was established as a refuge for children impacted by the Sri Lankan civil war that raged in their country for 25 years and ended in 2009.
To further this project, WAVE and Rotary A2W would like to take two local students to Sri Lanka to meet and work face-to-face with the girls in the orphanage along with Rotary Club members. By taking the students to Sri Lanka, the club believes all the girls' lives will be impacted in significant ways. This summer there will be approximately 40 people traveling to Grace Home in Trincomalee and the group will include the students along with two WAVE teachers.
WAVE students Skype regularly with the girls in Sri Lanka to learn about their lives and to assist in teaching the girls English and more about the American culture.
This coming summer there will be about 40 people going to Grace home and two of the girls from WAVE along with two WAVE teachers would like to make the trip as well to experience Grace Home in person and meet the Grace Home girls.
To fund a major portion of the trip, the girls started an aggressive fund raising effort through Go Fund Me and other events about a month ago with the goal of raising $10,000 for plane tickets and lodging. To date they have raised almost $8,000. You will have an opportunity to meet some of the Washtenaw students in the near future but here is a link to their Go Fund Me account: http://gofundme.com/srilankatrip
