Dr Ursula Jakrobs
Ursula Jakob studies the role of oxidative stress on host defense and aging. Her research funded by the NIH has made strides in understanding exactly how the physiological oxidant bleach kills bacteria, and how bacteria’s own defenses can protect against the cellular stress caused by bleach. The insights gained may lead to the development of new drugs to breach these microbial defenses, helping our bodies fight disease. In a parallel line of research, Dr. Jakob studies the effects of oxidants on the aging process and investigates how and when antioxidant systems might become effective in extending healthspan and lifespan in organisms.
Dr. Jakob received her B.S. degree in 1991 from Regensburg University in Germany, and her Ph.D. in 1995 also from Regensburg University. From 1996 until 1998 she was a postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of Michigan with a fellowship from the German government, and from 1998 until 2001 she was an Assistant Research scientist at UM. In 2001, Dr. Jakob joined the faculty ranks at UM.
Dr. Jakob has been chosen as a "Biological Scholar" at the University of Michigan, a prestigious designation awarded by a University-wide committee. She is also a recipient of the Burroughs Wellcome Fund Career Award in the Biomedical Sciences 2000 as well as of a faculty recognition award of the UM. In 2014, Dr. Jakob was elected into the Bavarian Academy of the Sciences and Humanities.
