Croquet Tournament Brings Community Together and Raises $16,750 for Boys & Girls Club
On September 13th, the Mennonite Heritage Center hosted the Annual Croquet Tournament organized by the Harleysville Croquet Club of Pennsylvania. With the support of the Harleysville Rotary Club, which generously used its 501(c)(3) status to help facilitate fundraising, the event successfully raised $16,750 for the Boys and Girls Club.
When the tournament began just four years ago, organizers worked hard to draw 60 participants. This year, the event welcomed 96 players, playing on 16 well-manicured courts — with a waiting list of eager croquet enthusiasts hoping to join. Players were divided into three groups based on ability: Novice, Intermediate, and Advanced, allowing everyone from beginners to seasoned players to enjoy the day.
Blessed with beautiful weather, the tournament introduced many newcomers to the game of croquet while also showcasing the strong community spirit that surrounds it.
Behind the scenes, planning began four months in advance. The dedicated committee — Lisa and Duane Reiss, Valerie Rolon, Brad Smith, Marsha Poust, Sandy and Gary Phifer, Janet Volpe and myself — worked tirelessly to ensure a smooth and successful event.
Looking ahead, the Harleysville Croquet Club has already announced that the next tournament will be held on September 12, 2026, again at the Mennonite Heritage Center.
In addition to its tournaments, the Harleysville Croquet Club plays at three to four different locations throughout the year. Efforts are underway to establish a permanent home where the club can continue to expand knowledge and appreciation of the game.
What began as a small local tournament has now become a hallmark community event, blending sport, fellowship, and philanthropy.
