Interact presentation, coordinated by Jennifer Detwiler (SAHS Math Teacher and Interact Club Advisor) who will be bringing two high school seniors from Souderton Area High School to speak to us. We welcome Eric Mensah, President of the Interact Club, and Kate Martin, a member of the club. They will speak about Interact and their experiences over the last year during COVID including what activities they were able to do or not do with regards to any service projects. Below is information about each of our speakers: Eric Mensah Hello, my name is Eric Mensah. I am currently a Senior at Souderton Area High School and I am also this year's President of the Interact Club. This is my third year in the club as a member and my first year as an officer. I joined the club in my sophomore year with two of my friends and was committed to being an active member. Thanks to Rotary I have been able to connect with all different types of people in all different walks of life. Through the club I have participated in an innumerable amount of events and activities that I would not otherwise have the opportunity to participate in. I am more than glad to be a member of Interact and help lead, but also keep the club alive even through the pandemic. In the future I plan to go to college and study Biochemistry in hopes to attend medical school and land a job in the medical field. Kate Martin Hello, my name is Kate Martin. I am currently a senior at Souderton Area High School and am a current member of the Interact Club. I joined the club last year just a few months before the pandemic began. I enjoy spending time helping out in the community, and discussing our intentions for the club's future at our monthly meetings. I have gotten close with the members by volunteering together and I wouldn't trade those friendships for the world! The Interact Club is an amazing way to bring the Rotary into our schools, and teach students what the Rotary is and how they help in communities all around the world! In my free time, I enjoy spending any time I can outdoors with my family and friends. My future plans are to attend college for dental hygiene. I can't wait to see what the future holds for the Interact Club and all of its members! |

Rwanda Kitchen & Bakery Project
Aug. 11, 2021
Amanda Helwig will coordinate a presentation about their District 7430 Grant to build a Kitchen and Bakery in Rwanda. They are seeking help from our fellow Rotary Clubs, as we need to raise $34,500 to make this happen. Amanda may be joining us in-person. The two presenters, Zooming in live from Rwanda, are Janet Brown and Bill Whipple. Together, Jan and Bill share 6 children, 8 grandchildren, including their Rwandan grandchild, William Brown Irakoze (Sweet Pea), shown in the photo with Bill, 3 great-grandchildren, plus 230 children at Bright School.
Janet Brown, M.Ed., a Penn State grad, is an international consultant in early childhood and primary teacher education. Jan capped a long career in teaching and educational publishing when she joined Crayola as Managing Editor. After her retirement--and having traveled to every continent except Africa--she was asked to start a preschool in Rwanda. Since 2010, she has volunteered as a teacher mentor and along the way founded and became president of TEACH Rwanda, an INGO based in the Lehigh Valley. William Whipple III, B.S., is a retired clinical dietician and diabetes educator with the Lehigh Valley Health Network. Bill also has restaurant management experience and is fluent in French. He and Jan married in 2012 and he moved to Rwanda to be with her shortly after. As a TEACH Rwanda volunteer and board member, he manages the organization's business on two continents, mentors our local administrative staff, and makes sure that our schools are healthy places to play and learn. |

Polio Plus
Sep. 15, 2021
Carol Ferguson, the Polio Plus Coordinator for our District, will be our virtual presenter. She is a survivor. With a team of volunteers they launched a Network that serves others in 2014. Working with and becoming a part of the Rotary Family has been the best part of their work. Carol appreciates our hybrid/online option, and loves 7am. Carol’s presentation The Polio Truths is a different perspective on the topic, from a Team of Survivors who have come together to help Rotarians understand the real story of just how destructive the poliovirus can be. The gift of Rotarians being willing to stay the course for the eradication of this disease, has resulted in an infrastructure that is impacting world health in a way that no one could have anticipated. This message becomes even more important as more and more Clubs in our District are bringing in new, younger members - members that may not even realize they had the polio vaccine as children. Polio survivors all over the US and abroad are truly grateful for this enormous effort. |
