The Healthy Rotarian - The SMART Tool (A strategy for changing behavior)

The SMART Tool can be helpful in self directing behavior toward positive lifestyle changes. The SMART Tooll guides an individual in setting goals for change and stands for specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time.

When setting a goal it is best to be specific about the objective. For example, to consume 8+ fresh/frozen fruits/vegetable servings per day to reduce blood pressure. This goal is specific and measurable. A food log can be kept to track the number of servings and plot progress.

The goal should be attainable which incorporates the idea of self-efficacy. For example if you are consuming 1 vegetable serving a day it would be better to set a goal to consume 3 servings to begin with which is probably more realistic. Small successes build confidence and encourages the desired behavior.

Relevance of the goal means you understand the scientific evidence of dietary nutrients and lowering blood pressure.

Setting goals in a progressive time scheme is better than a large block of time.  For example, to consistently consume 3 servings by the end of 1 month, then to consistently consume 6 servings by the end of 6 months, and to consistently consume 8 servings by the end of 12 months.

Now be SMART and get busy on making positive changes for better health!!!
