FIRST THIRSTDAY
PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
MSR Rotarians:

For those present for PDG Herb Klotz’s talk on strategic planning, you all know that has become more of a focus for Rotary.  The board will be gathering on April 12th to begin our own strategic planning for the next three years.  As you can imagine, clubs do not have the bandwidth to concentrate on all seven areas of focus in Rotary.  Part of this exercise is to give better definition to the things that Bethlehem Morning Star Rotary does in the areas of service and our grant activities. From here, we can better articulate our mission and strategy to the community, and we can focus on the kinds of fundraising activities to support our work.

If you have any thoughts on things that we are doing well, or on things you might like to see happen, please reach out to anyone on the board.  Successful strategic planning requires regular review and modifications as needed.  An idea you plant now may germinate into a larger club goal in the future.

To better implement this sort of plans, it will be necessary to add back the office of vice president in our club.  I realize that this was a difficult position to fill in the past, but if we are to truly have influence, we need more long-range goals that can only be accomplished through strong succession planning.  This will require a change to our by-laws, but you will hear more on this later.

Yours in Rotary,

Rodney Conn
President
BETHLEHEM EMERGENCY SHELTERING

           .
Morning Star Rotary members volunteered at the Bethlehem Emergency Sheltering on three evenings during the 2024-2025 winter months.  Members served food, washed dishes, and monitored the showers for the guests.  Our Rotary members are passionate about providing sustainable solutions to poverty, which is why we support the Bethlehem Emergency Shelter both financially and as volunteers.  The Bethlehem Emergency Sheltering is located at Christ Church UCC at 75 E Market Street, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania 18018.

A huge thank you to MSR Rotarian Justin Strasser for his exemplary work serving as Morning Star Rotary's coordinator for our service to Bethlehem Emergency Sheltering and to all the MSR Rotarians who volunteered their time to serve our community!
DISTRICT 7430 FRIENDSHIP EXCHANGE TO ARGENTINA

At our March 27, 2025 meeting, MSR Rotarian Mike Orbin presented President Rodney Conn with banners from various Rotary clubs that he had visited as part of a recent Distirct 7430 Rotary Friendship Exchange Trip to Argentina.  This exchange is all about building global connections, discovering new perspectives, and experiencing the magic of Rotary beyond borders.

CAT - COALITION FOR APPROPRIATE TRANSPORTATION

At our March 27, 20025 meeting, Scott Slingerland, Executive Director of CAT - Coalition for Appropriate Transportation of Lehigh Valley and MSR member Jennifer Cunningham, Vice President of CAT spoke to our members regarding the exciting work of their organization.  CAT was the recipient of the 2023 Morning Star Rotary Community Grant in support of their efforts our community.

Scott discussed the organization's vision to support bicycling, walking, and public transit in the Lehigh Valley region highlighting the importance of human-powered mobility, emphasizing the involvement of people of all ages and the need for choices in transportation. Scott mentioned various resources and initiatives, such as mechanic classes, group bike rides, advocacy with local governments, CAT' "Bike to Work" Week, and the importance of pedestrian safety.  He encouraged attendees to visit their bicycle cooperative and participate in their programs.

Jennifer discussed her preference for commuting by bike or walking, citing the benefits of mental health and cost savings. She shared her experiences of living close to work and adjusting her lifestyle to accommodate biking. Jennifer also mentioned her involvement with CAT and her desire to transform downtown Bethlehem into a bike-friendly area. She discussed various aspects of biking safety and road rules, emphasizing the importance of following the same road rules as cars, including stopping at red lights and stop signs. Jennifer also highlighted the significance of biking skills, such as using hand signals, making eye contact with other road users, and being aware of their surroundings.
"LET'S PLANT SOME NATIVE TREES..."

“Let’s plant some native trees, and why this is important to our ecosystems.”

Our April 17 speaker will be Bethlehem MSR club member Taylor Breinich, certified arborist, and also a member of MSR’s Green Team.  Taylor’s presentation will focus on why native trees are essential to our Planet’s regional ecosystems.

So why plant native?

•   Native trees and shrubs are low maintenance.  They have evolved in their respective regions and require less care for their survival, such as watering, which conserves water.

•   Because they are native to their ecosystem, they are part of the food web and support wildlife biodiversity.

•   Non-native trees, which can also be ‘invasive’ to natural environments, serve very little ecological value in-particular as a food source.  Invasive tree species can ‘crowd out’ native species, thus making it more difficult for an ecosystem to recover from centuries of human impact.

In recognition of April’s Arbor and Earth Day celebrations, Taylor is bringing 100 ‘bare root’ tree saplings to this presentation. These easy to carry saplings have been donated by her employer, Bartlett Tree Experts, for Rotary members and/or their friends and family to plant.  Taylor is bringing 25 Sugar Maple, 25 Serviceberry, and 50 Eastern Red Cedar trees.

To increase the positive impact on our Planet, the Green Team will also give instructions on how Rotary members can post their tree planting events on social media.  We seek to plant ideas as well, such as why ‘going native’ is important, and most of all, how the Bethlehem MSR club is supporting Rotary’s 7th Area of Focus - Supporting our Environment.

Come join us, get a tree or two, and spread the word!

STEM-YEA - DONATIONS NEEDED
**Message form Jane A. Meckes, Nazareth Rotary, District 7430 STEM-YEA Committee

Hi Everyone. Our district committee is busy planning for the upcoming STEMYEA program at Kutztown University.  I am on the committee and in charge of gathering materials. I have created two ways that Rotarians in our District can help provide items that are needed. First is an "Amazon Wish List" if you would like to purchase materials that we need. Any items purchased would be sent directly to me. Second is a recycled material list. You can help us out at no cost to you!  All you have to do is save the materials on the list and bring them to a meeting or event anytime. I already have a bin started for the items I have been collecting.

Here is the link for the Amazon Wish List: https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/35ZTJILB1ZGV7

Anything that you could provide would be gratefully appreciated.

Message from Rod Seifert:  Donated recycled items can be given to me at any upcoming meeting.  I will be happy to deliver them to Jane.
