Haiti National Clean Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Strategy
Many thanks to Rotarian Neil Van Dine for joining us on Zoom from Haiti. Mr. Van Dine works with HANWASH – Haiti National Clean Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Strategy, a capacity-building program to bring clean, potable water and sanitation to the entire nation of Haiti. This Rotary program focuses on building and developing a sustainable system necessary for the country to function.
Some alarming statistics:
💧 1/2 of Haiti’s water & sanitation infrastructure doesn't function.
💧 Only 30% of the people in Haiti have potable water within a 30-minute walk from their residence.
💧 In the rural villages, only 24% of Haitians have access to a toilet.
💧 2 million people practice open air defecation.
💧 Water borne illnesses (typhoid, cholera & dehydration through chronic diarrhea) account for 50% of deaths.

MAR 11 FIRE CAPTAIN LANDIS BFD
Fire Captain Kevin B. Landis of the Bethlehem Fire Department gave us comprehensive background information about the city's fire department and who our local firefighters are.

Article

Bethlehem’s history of firefighting began with the bucket brigade soon after the city’s founding in December 1741. The Bethlehem Fire Department has since grown to 108 firefighters at 4 stations.
Captain Landis explained to the Rotary Club of Bethlehem Morning Star what it takes to become a city firefighter. Beyond the physical and medical tests and background checks, a firefighter must be willing to miss holidays and important events with their families. Captain Landis is trained not only to fight fires, but also to assist with EMS, cases of terrorism, active shooters, and natural disasters.

The Bethlehem Fire Department responds to:
• over 15 calls/day
• over 5,000 calls/year
• 12,000 EMS calls/year

To help prevent fires, Captain Landis recommended a number of tips.
☑️ Check smoke detectors every month and change batteries every year.
☑️ Have a carbon monoxide detector if you have natural gas, oil heat, a fireplace or use a generator.
☑️ Stay near the stove when cooking.
☑️ Don’t store anything in the oven or on top of the stove
☑️ Don’t keep food on the stove for pets to go after.
☑️ Don’t wait to call 911 if you need help.

We can help emergency responders by being aware of our surroundings. If we see something strange, say something.

Thank you Captain Landis and all the First Responders!

MAR 08 TJ ELEMENTARY UPDATE
We wanted to reach out to tell you how thankful we are for your donation earlier this year! We were able to stock up our trading posts which is essential to our students especially with this year beginning the way it was. We were able to stock it up with things they may need here at school or at home like socks, umbrellas, fidget spinners, art supplies, water bottles, as well as mindfulness and other incentives and so much more! Also, because we have hearing impaired children that are dependent on lip reading, clear masks for our students and teachers are always in need as well.

We use this as a way to reinforce great behavior like doing all their work at home and school, having a great attitude, being a leader, and helping their teachers or friends. I've attached a couple pictures below so you can see for yourself! We will then purchase the items to restock our TJ Trading post.  Included in the items we will purchase will be hats, scarfs, umbrellas, students masks,   I am so grateful for the continued support of the Rotary.

Thank you for all you do for our community!

MAR 30 TRF APPALACHIAN TRAIL CHALLENGE
                                       image

Help support the Rotary Foundation Annual Fund-SHARE Fund by sponsoring me as I complete the last 110 miles of my Appalachian Trail adventure so that we can fund even more of your club's projects!  Here is the donation link: https://www.rotarydistrict7430.org/donate.

As many of you know, I've been section hiking the nearly 2200 mile Appalachian Trail for the past 15 years and have completed over 2050 miles. Last spring, the pandemic forced me to delay completing the trail for a year, but this upcoming Spring, I plan to hike the last 110 miles in North Carolina and Georgia.

The Rotary Foundation has enabled our district’s 46 clubs to work on many local and global projects through district and global grants. Thanks to your generosity, each year, our district receives over $100,000 in District Designated Funds for these grants. During the past few years, nearly every club in our district has received one or more grants to help their local communities and also to do amazing global projects.

You can sponsor me for any amount.  As an added incentive, our District Foundation team has created the TRIPLE 110 challenge!
  1. I complete the last 110 miles of the Appalachian trail.
  2. You support the Annual Fund by contributing $110 or more to the Annual Fund SHARE through the link below.
  3. The district matches your donation with 110 additional Paul Harris points (in addition to your donation) to get you closer to your next Paul Harris Fellow recognition level.
Please consider sponsoring me with a donation to the Rotary Foundation Annual Fund through the following link: https://www.rotarydistrict7430.org/donate.

Thank you!
