Haiti National Clean Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Strategy
Many thanks to Rotarian Neil Van Dine for joining us on Zoom from Haiti. Mr. Van Dine works with HANWASH – Haiti National Clean Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Strategy, a capacity-building program to bring clean, potable water and sanitation to the entire nation of Haiti. This Rotary program focuses on building and developing a sustainable system necessary for the country to function.
Some alarming statistics:
πŸ’§ 1/2 of Haiti’s water & sanitation infrastructure doesn't function.
πŸ’§ Only 30% of the people in Haiti have potable water within a 30-minute walk from their residence.
πŸ’§ In the rural villages, only 24% of Haitians have access to a toilet.
πŸ’§ 2 million people practice open air defecation.
πŸ’§ Water borne illnesses (typhoid, cholera & dehydration through chronic diarrhea) account for 50% of deaths.
