ROTARY PEACE CENTERS AND THE DUKE-UNC ROTARY PEACE CENTER

Scott Reynolds, a member of the Cary MacGregor Rotary Club in North Carolina, will join us on Zoom to discuss Rotary Peace Centers and the Duke-UNC Rotary Peace Center (one of six in the world). We'll learn more on how our club and Rotarians can be involved.

Duke University and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in North Carolina, located just 10 miles apart, jointly host the Duke-UNC Rotary Peace Center. Rotary Peace Fellows have the opportunity to earn both a master’s degree in International Development Policy from Duke and a graduate certificate in International Peace and Conflict Resolution from UNC.

A Rotarian since 1991, Scott has served as a President for two clubs, an assistant District Governor in two districts. Chair of the Youth Exchange Committee in District 7710 and is currently the Host Area Coordinator and Board Member of the Duke-UNC Rotary Peace Center.

He earned a BS in Electrical Engineering from North Carolina State University and is currently the Manager of Interconnections, Standard PPAs and Account Management for Duke Energy in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Haiti National Clean Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Strategy

Many thanks to Rotarian Neil Van Dine for joining us on Zoom from Haiti. Mr. Van Dine works with HANWASH – Haiti National Clean Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Strategy, a capacity-building program to bring clean, potable water and sanitation to the entire nation of Haiti. This Rotary program focuses on building and developing a sustainable system necessary for the country to function.

Some alarming statistics:

1/2 of Haiti’s water & sanitation infrastructure doesn't function.

Only 30% of the people in Haiti have potable water within a 30-minute walk from their residence.

In the rural villages, only 24% of Haitians have access to a toilet.

2 million people practice open air defecation.

Water borne illnesses (typhoid, cholera & dehydration through chronic diarrhea) account for 50% of deaths.

MAR 11 FIRE CAPTAIN LANDIS BFD

Fire Captain Kevin B. Landis of the Bethlehem Fire Department gave us comprehensive background information about the city's fire department and who our local firefighters are.

Bethlehem’s history of firefighting began with the bucket brigade soon after the city’s founding in December 1741. The Bethlehem Fire Department has since grown to 108 firefighters at 4 stations.

Captain Landis explained to the Rotary Club of Bethlehem Morning Star what it takes to become a city firefighter. Beyond the physical and medical tests and background checks, a firefighter must be willing to miss holidays and important events with their families. Captain Landis is trained not only to fight fires, but also to assist with EMS, cases of terrorism, active shooters, and natural disasters.

The Bethlehem Fire Department responds to:

• over 15 calls/day

• over 5,000 calls/year

• 12,000 EMS calls/year

To help prevent fires, Captain Landis recommended a number of tips.

Check smoke detectors every month and change batteries every year.

Have a carbon monoxide detector if you have natural gas, oil heat, a fireplace or use a generator.

Stay near the stove when cooking.

Don’t store anything in the oven or on top of the stove

Don’t keep food on the stove for pets to go after.

Don’t wait to call 911 if you need help.

We can help emergency responders by being aware of our surroundings. If we see something strange, say something.

World Water Day focuses on water’s importance

The COVID-19 pandemic has made it clearer than ever that hand washing — which requires a safe water source — is essential to our health. Yet more than 2 billion people worldwide don’t have access to clean water. Since 2014, The Rotary Foundation has invested more than $51 million in global grants to enable clubs to carry out projects that help people around the world with clean water, sanitation, and hygiene. For World Water Day on 22 March, learn how you can get involved in a water project and give to support our work in this area through our Donate page. Go to the Areas of Focus tab and choose Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene.

DISEASE PREVENTION

Rotary and COVID-19 vaccinations

Six district governors in Zones 33 and 34 worked with the Department of Health and Human Services in North Carolina, USA, to assist with COVID-19 vaccination efforts. The governors created a list of contacts from each Rotary club in their districts to provide to the state’s health department, which it in turn shared it with local health departments. The state also offered Rotary members across the state training about vaccinations, to empower them to raise awareness in their communities. Members volunteered at local vaccination sites to help health officials with logistics including data entry, crowd control, and patient registration.
