Kim Harper, Supervisor of Literacy & Humanities, K-12 of the Bethlehem Ares School District spoke to us on the topic “From Learning to Read to Reading to Learn”. As our club prepares to visit the area schools and provide close to 1,000 third graders with a dictionary, it is important to understand the positive impact of our Dictionary Project.

Many children do not have online access. One of the goals of the School District is to ensure that students are reading on level by the end of third grade. Studies have shown that 2 out of 3 4^th grade students will end up in jail or on welfare if they are not reading proficiently. If identified early there is a 90-95% success rate to reverse this trend.

Seeing the student’s excitement and learning of the educational impact of this project demonstrates Morning Star Rotary’s success in making a positive impact in the lives of the students.

(Ed. note: besides as Ron Helmuth so elegantly put it, "where else can you really crank up a bunch of 3rd graders and send them home!")

This week Rotarian Dr. Janet Sipple will introduce the program: The Australian Perspective - Nursing on the Frontline in Australia. Special Guests accompanying Janet will include Kym Volp, Janet Rankin, Erica Lambert, Donna Cooper and Celie Volp all from Queensland Australia. If you missed the Sipple Lecture last Wednesday, this will be a wonderful opportunity to learn about the challenges faced by our nursing friends from downunder.

The Nominating Committee is identifying candidates for the Board of Directors and Officers. Anyone wishing to step up to a leadership role in helping the Club progress, please contact any committee member. You will enrich the club and your own experiences as a Rotarian. Besides, we have FUN!

Who?

The Allentown Band will entertain Rotarians, friends, family, veterans, students and the general public

What?

An excellent concert by the oldest municipal band in the country, featuring patriotic and related songs.

When?

Sunday, Nov. 13 at 3:00 pm

Where?

Northeast Middle School Auditorium

1170 Fernwood St., Bethlehem

(Parking very close, and easy access)

Why?

To benefit Victory House of the Lehigh Valley and other Morning Star Rotary charities. Many of those served by Victory House are Veterans.

How can you help?

Be or find a SPONSOR - ad in the concert program book. Deadline for ads is Oct. 27.
Become a PATRON (listing in the concert program book) or recognize an active or veteran member of the Armed Services with an “IN HONOR OF” listing. (See the attached form or get it at meetings, or from Downloads on the club home page.)
BUY (or sell) the TICKETS (or more!) which given to each member by chair Gary Hartney. Adult ticket price remains $10. (If you can't use yours, consider donating them for Victory House residents to attend.)
POST CONCERT FLYERS in grocery stores and anywhere else potential concert-goers might see them!
Help the day of the concert with taking tickets, ushering, etc.

Oct 24 Weekly Foundation Thoughts

Why we support our Foundation

Every minute of every day someone’s life is being improved by our Rotary Foundation. Rotary clubs on every continent are working to improve the living conditions and health of their fellow citizens. Rotarians like you and me can make a difference by continually supporting our Foundation and the Annual Fund. As Rotarians we determine where funds are allocated through District Designated Funds, which we can use for local or international projects. When we contribute to our Foundation we are promoting worldwide Peace and Understanding.

Only if Every Rotarian Every Year makes a gift to the Annual Fund we will be able to continue to do the great work of The Rotary Foundation.

1. Go to www.morningstarrotary.org

2. Click Member Login (at top right)

3. If you don't know your Login Name or Password, click "New and existing users - Retrieve your password"

4. Fill in your last name and email address. ClubRunner will immediately email your Login Name and Password.

5. Note: the email address must match what ClubRunner has on file for you. If you can no longer access that email address, contact Jean Searfoss, Jeff Kicska or Ron Searfoss with your new address, and we will update it in ClubRunner for you.

After logging in, click on "Member Area" at the top right. Then look under "My ClubRunner" on the left side for a wide variety of club documents and information.
