Food, Families, and Health…it’s our topic for the week. Fellow Rotarian Denise Continenza will be visiting us from Penn State Extension talking about this very subject. Increasingly, we are learning of the connections between food, nutrition, and behavioral, as well as physical health. With the work that we do, and the interest for food access and sustainability, this should prove to be a very worthwhile subject to cover. This past week we spent some time reviewing our Strategic Plan, talking about our new committee structure, and I’m excited as we begin to move forward in new ways, taking on new projects and helping other organizations with theirs – truly living Service Above Self every day.
A few notes about upcoming events: next Thursday, August 3rd, is our First Thursday event at the Artisan Wine and Cheese Cellars. It is the night before Musikfest, so we may need to avail ourselves of street parking, but it will be a great opportunity to host newcomers and interested folks who might want to “try on Rotary” in our more relaxed, evening setting.
Phillies Strike Out Hunger takes place August 11th. Not only can you attend this great game vs. the Mets yourself, with your family, but our club receives $10 toward every ticket purchased in Foundation Credits. And, please consider purchasing an extra ticket for our friends at Victory House – they have space, and transportation, for 10, and would benefit greatly by attending a game. And, Rotary International President Ian Riseley will be in attendance, as well!

Please offer suggestions, or even go so far as to cultivate yourself, asks to businesses to consider sponsorship of our Celtic Classic 5K/10K. Encourage businesses to make a donation to the event AND pick up the tab for their employees who would like to participate in the race – it’s a great teambuilding effort!
Also coming up in September – the 16th, to be exact, is the next Rotary Leadership Institute; this year it is VERY close to home – DeSales University will be our host. I encourage all our members to attend this valuable training. Whether you are beginning with Part I, finishing up with Part 3, or even moving on to Graduate work, the club will reimburse your registration fee.
BUT – before August is halfway over, we’ll want to have nominations in for our first Ethics in Business Award winner. Please, download the nomination form; think carefully about businesses you know in Bethlehem that exemplify, through their actions and interactions with employees, customers, colleagues, and the community at large, the spirit of the 4Way Test.
PLEASE BRING A DONATION FOR OUR FOOD DRIVE. In honor of Past President Sharon’s contributions we will be collecting all summer to make a gift, and a difference, for New Bethany Ministries.
Fellow Rotarian and Extension Educator, Denise Continenza, will share information on how Penn State Extension helps to build strong youth, communities and families.
Denise will provide strategies and ideas for us to use in our everyday interactions with young people that will help them grow into responsible citizens and avoid many of the problem behaviors facing youth people today.
Morning Star Rotary’s annual dues are $200 per year (or $100 per half year). Treasurer Val Walk emailed the 2017-18 Dues Notices in early June. The Rotary year starts on July 1, and club Dues are due on June 30 so we may pay Rotary International and District 7430 their portions on a timely basis.
Thank you to all our members who have already submitted payment! Checks received in June were deposited the first week of July.

A new birthday tradition was established. The birthday celebrities received a folder with the Certificate Object of Rotary. This is quite suitable for proudly displaying in your office or other highly visible place to show your interest and support of Rotary.
