President’s Message for April 30, 2015

On April 23, our current Vice President and soon to be President Elect Sharon Fontana took the podium for her classification talk. Even though Sharon is a new member of Morning Star, she has been a Rotarian for over fifteen years. Sharon started her banking career right at the top – working for a Wall Street firm. She worked full time and went to college at night – a self-made woman! She particularly liked her role as an international banker helping fashion companies with import financing – a possible explanation for her great fashion sense. She continued her banking career in the Poconos (said she is still waiting for the train to come to Stroudsburg). She loves the direct customer interaction in branch banking. She moved to Lafayette Ambassador Bank as the Bethlehem Branch Manager to continue in a customer facing role. Sharon has two children: Rachael, an NYU grad, and Matthew, a Robert Morris grad. Sharon enjoys the outdoors, especially biking hiking and the beach. We are glad that Sharon chose Morning Star to continue her Rotary life and that she has stepped up to a bigger role in our club leadership.

Sharon brought Robert Aspenleiter as her guest. Bob is a Regional Manager with Mazda and we hope to see him around more frequently. This week, expect to see both Dee and Jess Elliott’s guests as part of the “Prospective Member Challenge”. We need two volunteers for the “Prospective Member Challenge” for May – who will take the challenge? Or just make the commitment to pick one or two acquaintances to introduce to Rotary and share our “Service Above Self” ideals. Guests are always welcome.

This week’s program (4/30) features the engaging, wonderful and beautiful Annika, our 2014 – 2015 exchange student from Finland. You don’t want to miss her tales of being hosted by the Kolepps, the Mohrs and the Bakers – complete with pictures.

Friday night May 1 is all hands on deck for the MSR Spaghetti Dinner. By now you should have signed up for your volunteer roles. Val Walk will still accept table sponsorships, desserts or gift baskets for the raffle. Watch for emails from Val or Jean Searfoss if there are specifics about your role. In the meantime, sell your tickets and give your ticket proceeds to Sue Reeps.

I did not attend the District 7430 Conference in Gettysburg last weekend. We will have to get the story from our attendees: President Elect Ron Searfoss, Immediate Past President Jean Searfoss, Conference Treasurer Tom Hartzell, District Exchange Student Committee Member John St. Clair, Conference Registrar Marianne Aronson and husband Steve, and our Exchange Student Annika.

Janet and I did have the pleasure to attend the wedding of Christopher Isaacs, the eldest son of former MSR members McGehee and Betty Isaacs. Here is a picture of the Isaacs and Kolepps at the reception – proof that we did not just skip the District Conference.

Add these upcoming club events to your calendar. See the MSR website for additional information:
  • Golf Tournament: This is only one month away on June 1, 2015 to benefit the Bridges Foundation. We need hole sponsors, foursomes of golfers, raffle donations and volunteers.
  • Celtic Classic 5K / 10K Race: Saturday September 26, 2015.
Here are District events of interest. More details are found on the District website.
  • District Training Assembly: REGISTER NOW ON THE 7430 DISTRICT WEBSITE for Saturday May 16 starting 7:30 AM at Montgomery County Community College in Blue Bell. This is only two weeks away. All MSR’ians are encouraged to attend. Registration fees will be reimbursed after attending. Ride signups will be circulated.
  • Camp Neidig (RYLA) 2015: June 19 – 22 with closing ceremony & dinner on June 22
  • District Turnover Meeting and Dinner: June 29 at William Penn Inn in Gwynedd (Ambler), PA.
  • Rotary Leadership Institute: Saturday November 7, 2015 at the Radisson Hotel in King of Prussia. (Other dates are available at different locations.) MSR reimburses attendees and all MSR’ians are encouraged to attend.
April is over with only May and June left in this Rotary year, please do your part to meet our 2014-2015 initiatives – “Every Member Brings a Prospective Member” and our “Every Member Every Year” Rotary Foundation contribution.

If you are visiting Bethlehem or our website or you want to learn more about Bethlehem Morning Star or Rotary International, please contact Tom Kolepp via email at tkolepp@gmail.com or via mobile phone at 484-241-1251.

Let's continue to "Light Up Rotary". Regards. President Tom

Morning Star was well represented at the District Conference in Gettysburg as President Kolepp indicated. Light Up Rotary was a very appropriate theme with a wonderful celebration of Rotary fellowship.  A quick synopsis follows with more extensive observations next week.
Exchange programs were a siginificant part, both the Friendship Exchange Team from Wales and the amazing Youth Exchange students – 22 inbound and outbound students.  Truly the future will be in good hands with these young ‘future Rotarians”!
There were presentations on excellent and highly successful Community Programs as well as Global Education Projects.

Patti Smith, District Chair of Youth Exchange, received a Rotary International Distinguished Service Award, one of only 150 such awards worldwide annually, in recognition of her more than 20+ years of service in Youth Exchange. Video clips from several of her prior exchange students, including the first in 1993, highlighted how much impact the program and Patti made in their lives. Truly she profits most who serves best!

The Healthy Rotarian - "Ugh!  It's Sinus Season"

Sinusitis means congestion, excess mucus, and uncomfortable pressure caused by swelling of the sinus cavities.  You are also familiar with stuffiness and throbbing pain in the cheeks, forehead, and around the eyes; exhaustion, and headaches.  Dental problems in the teeth or jaw can also be an issue.  Sinusitis affects more than 37 million Americans!

What to do?

1. Hydrate & Humidify - drink lots of water to thin sticky mucous secretions. Humidify air in your home & work spaces as dry air irritates already inflamed sinuses.
2. Rinse & Repeat - the Neti pot used for thousands of years is still a good idea.  This procedure
washes the irritants out of the sinuses. Go to YouTube for a demonstration and additional
   information.
3. Spiraling, a blue-green alga is an effective treatment for allergic rhinitis.  Seek out the alga in
powders, tablets, or capsules, but be sure to choose high quality varieties that have been
tested to be free of heavy metals.
4. If you are plagued by sinus problems, try reducing dairy intake for a few weeks to see if
symptoms improve.  Certain breeds of cows produce milk that contains a protein (CM-7) that
can stimulate mucus glands in the sinuses, respiratory tract, and digestive tract in susceptible
    people.
5. Clean House - Besides mold, other sources of indoor air pollution are often to blame for sinus
woes. Keep indoor air clean: get ride of chemical based cleaning products.  Consider an air
purifier or a ozone generator. Ask yourself, is my house making me sick?
6.Tame the Flame - Quercetin, an antioxidant found in apples, onions, citrus fruits, red wine,
parsley, and tea acts as an antihistamine.  This can help reduce inflammation and modulate
allergic reactions that lead to sinus issues. Serrapeptase, is an enzyme that has been shown to
break down mucus and promote normal inflammatory response in the body.
7. Avoid Mycotoxins - a chemical compound produced by fungi that exacerbates sinus
problems. These are common in foods such as peanuts, corn, wheat, barley, sugar, alcohol,
cottonseed oil, aged cheese, and mushrooms.
8. Take Butterbur - this plant used for hundreds of years to treat headaches, fever, and allergies
has shown that it can alleviate some respiratory problems producing sinus issues. Choose a
tinctures or capsules with standardized formula for petasin & isopetasin the active
components.  The plant contains PAs (pyrrolizidine alkaloids) that can damage the liver,        choose a product certified & labeled "PA-free".
9.  Get Some Safe Sun - The best way to get vitamin D which may alleviate sinus problems by
enhancing immune function.  D suppresses the inflammatory response helping the body
prevent viruses and infections in the sinuses.  About 10-15 minutes of direct sun 3-4 times a
week is enough to help the body produce sufficient vitamin D.
10.  Spray Away - use a nasal spray containing xylitol which stops bacteria and yeast.  A
substitute sugar the bacteria/yeast eat the xylitol thinking its sugar therefore starving. Xylitol sold under the brand name Xlear may be found in product names such as Serretia, Petadolex Pro-Action, SinoOrega, SinusClear, and NetiXleR Sinus Clear Rinse.

Don't suffer with sinusitis....take charge with appropriate ACTION.
