Ron Bauer visited Morning Star last Thursday. As a member of the Downtown Rotary Club since 1984, he was involved in many projects over the years, including tireless efforts on behalf of the Salvation Army – Bell Ringing come to mind? One of these projects involved a Rotarian from Easton, Dr. Updegrove, who had the objective of collecting discarded medical equipment to support people in Belize to address their medical needs. Long story short – the project was a success and Ron and Dr. Updegrove became close friends. Dr. U was an avid fisherman, as is Ron Bauer. Dr. U invited Ron to join him on one of his annual fishing trips to Canada. This was a smashing success for a number of years until Dr. U retired. Ron looked around for another partner and found our own Frank Lulewitz was a fishing fanatic as well. Hence the topic of Ron’s talk was not about Rotary (but you see the connections!) but on their amazing experiences fishing at Mosquito Lake in the Arctic regions of Canada.
Itinerary – get to Winnipeg; take a charter flight about 900 miles north then fly the balance of the way on a small pontoon airplane. Welcome to Tukto Lodge, Northwest Territories. The fish spend 9 months under the frozen ice and are totally ravenous when they finally get to surface! Accommodations – you sleep in tents of course! The season only lasts a little over two months. But the lake trout are unbelievable. Being the ‘frozen tundra’, there are no trees. The amazing variety of wildlife are completely oblivious to these strangers with funny poles and rubber boats visiting their environment.
Ron presented a wonderful talk of their adventures and had fantastic pictures of their trips. Crystal clear pure water (cold as h--- though) wonderful variety of wildlife – fox, caribou by the thousands, moose, elk, bears and wolverines and a few dedicated fisherman visiting. The government owns the land and all fishing is catch and release. What a wonderful experience. Thanks Ron!

This contribution will generate annual earnings from $60,000 to $80,000 for The Rotary Foundation AND will generate annual earnings from $60,000 to $80,000 which will come back to our District for projects for our clubs. This will continue as long as there is Rotary!

The final Rotary Foundation Annual Fund push is on to qualify Morning Star to repeat as a “100% Participation” Club and average over $100 per member. If you have not already given, please give your Foundation contribution in any amount into Tom Hartzell or the “$2 a Week” Table by May 27 so that he can assure proper credit to both you and the club for our achievement.
