Kathleen Matson, Tasting Room Manager from Galen Glen Winery was our special guest speaker December 3rd.

Our Thursday meetings being at 7am, unfortunately there were no opportunities for sampling. Kathy started with an excellent video of the Winery and its operations produced using “drone technology.” Galen Troxell and his wife, Sarah, started the winery in 1995 on heirloom property which has been in the Troxell family for over 225 years! Galen is the 6th generation to farm the land.

Galen Glen has been very successful having garnered numerous accolades –
  ♦ Pioneered planting the Gruner Veltliner Grape in the US in 2003; recognized as a leading grower of Zweigelt;
  Internationally known producer of Ice Wine (they Farm Wine 365 days a year!);
  Named Best Winery, Pennsylvania by the New York International Wine Competition in Manhattan;
  Named Best Woman Winemaker, International Women of Wine Competition, Sonoma, CA
  Only winery named on Zagat’s “10 Reasons to Drive to the Lehigh Valley”

Galen Glen Winery is very community oriented and embraces the Rotary Motto of Service Above Self by conducting Annual Events helping others –
  ► The American Cancer Society
  Family Promise of Carbon County
  Toys for Tots
  The West Penn Fire Company

Kathy went on to explain the significance of the “Crooked Stick” in their logo and throughout the areas of the Winery and their literature. The cherry sapling symbolizes their perseverance. Chopped down by Galen, the first vineyard was planted using the stick for row spacing, creating meandering grapevines.
Crooked Vines. Exquisite Wines.
Although Kathy did not have samples, she does recommend a Concord with Peanut Butter Cap’n Crunch for breakfast.
