A Rotary Parable

(Full disclosure: I stole this story from Marianne. So when she finally decides to become President and finds herself stuck for a weekly email topic, I totally owe her one).

True story (according to Marianne). At one of the recent winter Olympics, the bobsled finals came down to 2 teams: the British and Italians. It was a fierce rivalry. The British were to race first. Just before they were to launch, they realized that their sled was missing a critical bolt. They did not have an extra and would not be allowed to race. The Italians waiting to race, heard about the reason for the delay, and, finding out the reason, offered their extra bolt. The British were able to complete the run. As it turned out, the British had the faster time and won the Gold while the Italians came in second for the Silver. The British thanked the Italians profusely. Back at home the British were heralded as heroes while the Italians were ridiculed as traitors. They could have brought home the Gold if they had not rescued the British.

And that is how it is with Rotary. We don’t do the things we do in our community and around the world for personal glory. We don’t expect honors and awards and accolades. We do the work we do, simply because it’s the right the thing to do. It’s as simple as that.

Coming Up

Even though it’s the end of the Rotary year, it’s a really busy time of year for Rotary. As I wrap up my year, Jean is just gearing up for hers so please think of how you would like to serve Rotary in the coming year and what you would like to learn about in Rotary or in your community, and pick a committee that best suits your goals. And let Jean know.

There are lots of events coming up. I don’t want to sound like a broken record here so please check our calendar and the District Calendar. There are no shortage of ways to get your Rotary fix in June and July.

Except for Golf! I will remind you that next Monday is the Golf tournament and I sure it’s not too late to register to golf. Or find a sponsor.
