Since February is the month of love, I have decided that each week I will highlight one aspect of Rotary that I love! This week it is the fight against polio. Did you know there is a whole new website dedicated to just THIS effort? – Here is the link – check it out:
There are many reasons that I love Rotary’s commitment to the fight against polio. One is because we are in it for the duration. We are very close to the end. We could back out now. We could say, “We have done enough, let someone else finish the job. We have given enough effort. It’s too hard. We have done all we can. It’s going to cost too much. It’s impossible.” But Rotary is not going to give up. We were there at the beginning and we are going to be there at the end. Sure, there are more popular diseases we could go after, maybe easier targets, maybe targets where we could see a faster “return on our money” but as our speaker at the District Conference said last spring: “If we are not there at the end, no one will remember that we were there at the beginning.”
Another reason I am so grateful for our fight against polio is because I know a small amount of help make a huge difference. And there are many ways to get involved. You can donate your time at a fundraiser. You can participate in an immunization day in India. There are always those infusions of cash and most importantly, you can always tell your friends about Rotary.
I am very proud to be a part of Rotary’s efforts in the fight against Polio. I think it was Napoleon who said, “The difficult we can do right away, the impossible just takes a little longer.”
This week we are delighted to welcome Stephanie Hnatiw as our speaker. She is with the YWCA Tech Gyrls Program and is one of our grant recipients. I am expecting lots of left over happy dollars from last week. I have a “Payback is a Bear” dollar.
