President’s Message October 21:

Last Thursday at our October 16 meeting, our very own Dr. Janet Sipple provided a thought provoking update on “Human Trafficking and Rotary’s Response”.  Janet educated us on the very dark side of this form of slavery that still exists today and mainly impacts the young and poor among us.

Janet’s presentation previewed this Wednesday (10/22) night’s Sipple Lecture when Dr. Donna Sabella delivers her talk on “Human Trafficking: Global and Local Perspectives” at Moravian College’s Foy Hall at 5:30 PM. Janet encouraged us to arrive in advance of up to 1,200 people eager to hear Dr. Sabella’s remarks. Lots of parking is available under the Main Street overpass and it’s an easy walk to Foy Hall from there.

After Dr. Sabella’s talk, there will be a reception in the Foy Hall Gallery, and then Morning Star Rotarians will adjourn for dinner at The Brick Restaurant on the corner of Broad and New Streets.  Join us for dinner whether or not you attended the lecture. If not signed up for dinner, then contact Tom Mohr now so he can modify our reservation with The Brick.

  • Rotary Foundation Seminar on Saturday October 25 at the Double Tree Hotel in King of Prussia. The topic is: GLOBAL GRANTS & DISTRICT GRANTS:   OUR FOUNDATION DOING GOOD RIGHT HERE AND IN THE WORLD. So far, Tom Hartzell, Ron Searfoss and Tom and Janet Kolepp will be attending. There is room for more registrants, but you must register now on the District 7430 website. Morning Star will refund the registration upon completion.
  • Rotary Leadership Institute on Saturday November 8 in Wilkes-Barre. Registration will be refunded by the club upon course completion and car pools will be available. So far, Searfosses, Kolepps  and Cheryl Baker are registered. All are welcome. See www.RLInea.org for details and registration for RLI I, II, III or Graduate.
  • Salute the Troops Concert on Sunday November 9. Chairperson Gary Hartney has distributed tickets and encourages members to recruit sponsors, get in your ads or recognition listings, and line up family and friends to attend.

Join us this Thursday October 23 to hear Kim Schaffer, Executive Director of Community Bike Works speak on “Learning Life Lessons through Bicycle Mechanics”. Kim became Executive Director in 2013 with 20 years of experience in nonprofit and local government management, including nearly 10 years as a senior staff member at the National Low Income Housing Coalition in Washington, DC. Kim graduated from Lycoming College and received her master’s degree in urban planning from the University of Illinois at Chicago.
