President’s Message for March 5, 2015

“Accessible Art” was the topic of the day at our February 26 meeting. Delia Chatlani of the Lehigh University Art Galleries (LUAG) introduced us to the LUAG programs and then focused on the process of making art accessible –generally to people with any type of disability and specifically to the visually impaired or blind.  Morning Star Rotary supported the LUAG blind-accessibility project with a Community Development Grant. Delia played an audio description of Picasso’s “Girl With  A Mandolin” to demonstrate one aspect of improved accessibility. To see similar descriptions, please visit: http://www.artbeyondsight.org/mei/verbal-description-training/samples-of-verbal-description/.

Delia was accompanied by Denise Stangl, Operations Administrator Zoellner Arts Center. Denise thanked us for the grant support and invited us to visit, especially their Zoellner location. Our Fellowship Committee will be in discussion with Denise about a possible future social event. More LUAG information can be found at www.luag.org.

Please attend our March 5 meeting when Paula Ream, Executive Director of the Cancer Support Community, presents another in our series of programs from our Community Development Grant recipients.

Membership Reminder: We need everyone’s help to recruit new members. Invite someone who would be a great Rotarian to a March meeting or event. Good news – frequent recent guest Bill Hunter will be rejoining this month after his triumphal return from his speech at the United Nations. Plus Ellen Roberts brought Patricia McAndrew as her guest. Patricia helped us pack dictionaries for delivery and is also a supporter of the LUAG programs.

“Every Member Every Year”: The Board requests 100% Rotarian participation with donations of any amount to the Foundation. Please contribute soon or talk to Foundation Chair Tom Hartzell with any questions.
