President’s Message for February 19, 2015

At last week’s meeting (February 12), Dale Kochard gave an informative talk about the Bridges Foundation the goal of which is to provide deserving students of Bethlehem Area Vocational -Technical School the ability and financial support to fulfill career aspirations. The initial inspiration was to keep young people pursuing vocational careers in the Lehigh Valley. It has grown into a program that provides annual scholarships to graduating seniors to trade schools and both community and four year colleges. The 2015 edition of the Annual Rotary Golf Tournament, co-sponsored by the Morning Star Rotary and the Bethlehem Rotary, will benefit the Bridges Foundation. Our support for this will recharge MSR’s support for Rotary’s “Vocational Avenue of Service” which your Board of Directors has been trying to address for several years.

Please attend our February 19 meeting when Dr. Jeffrey Zlotnick & Dara Rees present on Patient First of Bethlehem. Dr. Zlotnick will talk about urgent care, how and when to use it, and when you should go to urgent care vs the ER. Their newly built facility is on the corner of Schoenersville and Jacksonville Roads.

Here are the upcoming club events on your calendar and see the MSR website for additional information:

  • MSR Bowling Night: The Fellowship Committee invites you and guests to MSR Bowling Night on Saturday March 8 from 6 – 8 PM at Revolutions on Route 378. (See story below.)
  • Four Way Speech Contest: Wednesday March 18 6PM at Bethlehem Town Hall. Speech contestants needed. If you have leads, contact Ben Tenaglia. This is only four weeks away. Plus, there will be a social event at the Brick at the conclusion of the contest for both MSR and Bethlehem Rotarians and guests. Stay tuned for details.
  • MSR 25th Anniversary Celebration: Saturday March 28 in the evening. $45 per person at the Goosey Gander on 4th Street in South Bethlehem. Food. Dancing. Memories. Sign up with Jan Chicka.
  • MSR Spaghetti Dinner: Friday May 1 at East Hills Moravian Church. Tickets coming soon.
  • Golf Tournament: June 1, 2015 at Silver Creek Country Club to benefit the Bridges Foundation.

  • District 7430 Conference: April 24 – 26 in Gettysburg
  • District Training Assembly: Saturday May 16 starting 7:30 AM at Montgomery County Community College in Blue Bell
  • Camp Neidig (RYLA) 2015: June 19 – 22 with closing ceremony & dinner on June 22

Foundation Reminder: To meet our Rotary Foundation “Every Member Every Year” goal, we need 100% Rotarian participation in donations of any amount to the Foundation. Please contribute soon so that the Foundation Committee knows we will achieve our goal or talk to Tom Hartzell (our Foundation Chairperson) with any questions.

Just a reminder on the membership front: We need everyone’s help to recruit new members. Invite someone who you feel would be a great Rotarian to a February meeting.
