The Healthy Rotarian # 8 – Zzzzzzz’s Matter

Sleep matters to immune function, metabolism, memory, learning and other vital functions. While there are still mysteries about “why” we sleep, it is clear to sleep scientists that sleep’s potential role in memory and health is particularly relevant to life in the 21st century. Tips for healthy sleep
- Avoid Caffeine, Alcohol, Nicotine, and Other Chemicals (pain relievers) that Interfere with Sleep
- Turn Your Bedroom into a Sleep-Inducing Environment (quiet, dark, cool)
- Establish a Soothing Pre-Sleep Routine
- Go to Sleep When You’re Truly Tired
- Don’t Be a Nighttime Clock-Watcher
- Use Light to Your Advantage
- Keep Your Internal Clock Set with a Consistent Sleep Schedule
- Nap Early—Or Not at All
- Lighten Up on Evening Meals
- Balance Fluid Intake
- Exercise Early not late in the day
If your sleep difficulties don’t improve through good sleep hygiene, you may want to consult your care provider or a sleep specialist. For more information go to http://sleepfoundation.org/ask-the-expert/sleep-hygiene
