Mongolia Connect Project
Nick Millward is the President of Yokosuka Council on Asia-Pacific Studies (YCAPS). He will join us all the way from Japan to tell us more about the Mongolia Connect project and working with the homeless shelters in Ulaanbaatar.
Nick graduated and was commissioned in the Marine Corps from Virginia Military Institute in 2014 with a Bachelor of Arts in International Studies. After deploying in support of Operation Odyssey Lightning in Libya, Nick moved to Japan. While coordinating with US Embassies in the Asia-Pacific Region, he traveled to Mongolia and lived with the nomads for a short time. Upon returning to Japan, Nick partnered with a local Mongolian family and multiple homeless shelters in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia in order to provide clothes, blankets, and shoes for the shelters. In July 2020, Mongolia suffered devastating flash floods that left thousands of families homeless. The Mongolia Connect project raised over $10k, has purchased 2 homes (gers) and sent over 200 boxes of supplies to 4 districts in Mongolia. Nick’s passion for preserving nomadic communities on the periphery inspired him to apply for the Rotary Peace Fellowship at the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia.
