April 28, 2025 — Attendees at a recent York East Rotary Breakfast meeting were treated to a fascinating demonstration by Terri and Jack Heck from Summit Search and Rescue, featuring one of their top canine detectives—Stratton, a skilled and determined bloodhound trained in scent tracking. Led by seasoned handlers from the nonprofit organization, the presentation showcased Stratton’s remarkable ability to locate a person using only a scent article. As the crowd watched, Stratton eagerly picked up a trail and navigated his way through the room with precision, demonstrating the power of the breed’s legendary nose.

Before the demonstration, Summit Search and Rescue explained what makes bloodhounds such exceptional trackers. "They have over 300 million scent receptors—more than any other dog breed," one handler shared. "Their long ears and wrinkled skin help trap scent particles and funnel them toward their nose, making them unparalleled in scent tracking work." Stratton’s skills are not just for show. Summit Search and Rescue has been called on countless times to assist in locating missing persons across Pennsylvania and beyond. Their bloodhounds are trained for real-life search and rescue missions, often working in coordination with law enforcement. The demonstration also gave the team a chance to raise awareness about the importance of scent preservation and the steps families can take in case a loved one goes missing. “The earlier we can start a search, and the better the scent article, the greater the chance of success,” a representative explained. Summit Search and Rescue, a volunteer-based organization, emphasized that their work is made possible through community support. They encouraged those interested to consider volunteering, donating, or simply spreading awareness about their mission.
