August 27, 2024 - Members of the York East Rotary Club were treated to an insightful presentation by two distinguished leaders from ARC of York County: Jim Poster, Associate Director, and Josh Leik, Executive Director. The duo shed light on the organization's vital work and the impact of their programs, particularly highlighting the successes of Camp Pennwood, a summer camp designed for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Jim began the presentation by providing an overview of Camp Pennwood, one of ARC of York County's flagship programs. Established with the mission to provide a safe, fun, and supportive environment, Camp Pennwood offers individuals with disabilities a chance to experience the joys of summer camp while also fostering independence, social skills, and self-confidence. "Camp Pennwood is more than just a summer camp," he explained. "It’s a place where friendships are forged, new skills are learned, and our campers get to experience the same joys and challenges as their peers in a fully inclusive environment." Josh took the stage next, elaborating on the broader spectrum of services provided by ARC of York County. While Camp Pennwood is a cornerstone of their offerings, the organization’s reach extends far beyond summer activities. "Our mission is to empower people with disabilities to live their best lives," Josh stated. "This means providing support not just during the summer, but throughout the year, in every aspect of life." He explained the other programs: Advocacy Services: ARC of York County actively works to protect and promote the rights of individuals with disabilities, ensuring they have access to the services and support they need. Educational Programs: The organization offers a variety of educational initiatives aimed at helping individuals with disabilities develop essential life skills, from job training to financial literacy. Community Integration: ARC of York County places a strong emphasis on helping individuals with disabilities become active, engaged members of their communities. This includes support in finding employment, participating in social and recreational activities, and accessing community resources. Respite Services: Recognizing the challenges faced by families and caregivers, ARC provides respite care, offering a much-needed break while ensuring that loved ones are well cared for. The Rotary Club members left the meeting inspired and informed, with a renewed appreciation for the critical work being done by ARC of York County. The presentation by Jim Poster and Josh Leik served as a powerful reminder of the impact that dedicated individuals and organizations can have on building a more inclusive, supportive community for all.
