August 26, 2025 - Wayne Martin, founder of The Academic Athlete, shared his inspiring story and mission with the York East Rotary Club at its weekly breakfast meeting on Tuesday. Martin, an electrical engineer by training, created The Academic Athlete, a York-based nonprofit, to encourage young people—particularly those with limited resources—to excel in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). His organization helps students see possibilities beyond the playing field and provides mentorship, guidance, and practical opportunities to pursue academic success. “Sports are a great outlet,” Martin told the club, “but for many kids, that’s the only dream they’re told is possible. I want them to know that they can succeed as scientists, engineers, and innovators too.” Martin, who is a minority, noted that strangers often assume he must have been a professional football player because of his stature and background. He uses this common assumption as a teaching moment for young people, showing them that success isn’t limited to athletics. “I tell them, don’t let others define what you’re capable of. You get to write your own story.” The Rotary members learned how The Academic Athlete partners with local schools, community groups, and businesses to connect students with role models in STEM careers. By offering tutoring, enrichment programs, and mentorship, the nonprofit opens doors for students who may not otherwise see themselves in those roles.
