August 6, 2024 – Mindy McDonnell, Director of Youth Services with York County Libraries, spoke at the York East Rotary Club meeting this week with an engaging presentation on the library's diverse and enriching summer programs for children. Her talk focused on the importance of keeping young minds active and engaged during the summer break. The staff is focused on finding the best way to serve the communities that surround the 13 libraries in York County.  McDonnell, who plays a crucial role in developing children's programming at the library, emphasized the library’s mission to foster a love of reading and lifelong learning in the community. She highlighted several initiatives designed to achieve these goals, ensuring that children have access to educational and fun activities throughout the summer months. One of the cornerstone programs discussed was the Summer Quest initiative, which encourages children to read and explore through a variety of themed activities and challenges. This program is tailored to different age groups, from toddlers to teenagers, and includes reading challenges, science experiments, art projects, and interactive storytelling sessions. "Summer Quest is not just about reading—it's about discovery and adventure," McDonnell explained. "We want to inspire kids to learn and grow, even when school is out." In addition to Summer Quest, McDonnell highlighted the library’s collaboration with local schools and community organizations to expand its reach and impact. The library offers weekly workshops and special events, such as author visits and educational performances, to engage children and families throughout the county. The Rotary Club members expressed their appreciation for the library's efforts and discussed potential partnerships to further support children's literacy and education in the community.
