October 7, 2025 At a recent meeting of the York East Rotary Club, members enjoyed an engaging presentation from Blake Gifford, architect and creator of York Architecture Illustrated. Gifford, who has lives and works in York, Pennsylvania, for the past eight years, combines his professional expertise with his passion for local history to shed new light on the city’s architectural heritage. In addition to his architectural practice, Gifford serves on York City’s Historic Architectural Review Board and the York County History Center’s Building and Grounds Committee, where he helps preserve the community’s historic character. In 2022, he launched York Architecture Illustrated, a social media project featuring his detailed artwork and commentary on York’s historic buildings. His goal is to spark public conversation about the city’s architectural identity and the value of preservation.
During his presentation, Gifford shared stories and sketches from his guided walking tour along West Market Street, between Pershing Street and Continental Square. The tour explores architectural treasures that have withstood the test of time, weaving together narratives from multiple eras to illustrate York’s growth and evolution. Through his art and storytelling, Gifford invites residents and visitors alike to see familiar streets with fresh eyes and to appreciate the craftsmanship and history embedded in York’s built environment. His work reminds the community that the city’s past is not just preserved in books—it’s etched into the very buildings that line its streets.
