February 11, 2025 - Dr. Alyessa Moyer, Vice President of WellSpan Health and President of WellSpan York Hospital, recently spoke to York East Rotary Club about the hospital’s major expansion project. The highlight of the project is an eight-story surgical and critical care tower, designed to enhance specialized medical services and accommodate the latest advancements in technology. One of the most striking aspects of the construction is the towering crane that now dominates the York skyline. At 227 feet, the hammerhead crane—one of the largest in the mid-Atlantic—rises nearly 23 stories above the hospital campus. The crane, previously used in a Philadelphia hospital project, was delivered in multiple pieces and assembled on-site. Unlike cranes that are affixed to a rising structure, this one is anchored to the ground, requiring extensive foundation work.  The new surgical and critical care tower will introduce cutting-edge resources, including larger, state-of-the-art surgical suites, the latest in robotic surgery and medical technology, and expanded pre- and post-operative care areas. Dedicated spaces will support cardiovascular, neurology, and trauma care, enhancing the hospital’s ability to provide specialized treatment. Additionally, new intensive care unit rooms will be designed with privacy and comfort in mind, including space for families to stay with their loved ones. The expansion project represents a $427 million investment in the community, adding more than 248,000 square feet of new space and 32,000 square feet of renovated space. Upon completion in early 2027, WellSpan York Hospital will have more than 600 beds, solidifying its position as one of the largest hospitals in Pennsylvania. The project is also expected to create approximately 500 new jobs in the local healthcare sector. Founded in 1880 in downtown York before relocating to its current campus in 1929, WellSpan York Hospital is York County’s largest employer, with nearly 5,000 employees working on its 28-acre site. The health system contributes over $1.8 billion annually to the local economy. As construction progresses, WellSpan’s leadership remains focused on their long-term mission—ensuring that York County residents have access to top-tier healthcare in a facility that meets the demands of modern medicine.
