June 11, 2024 – In a presentation to the York East Rotary Club on Tuesday, Susie Byrnes, the Co-founder and board chair of the York County Veterans Outreach Program (YCVOP), shared the mission and comprehensive services provided by the organization. Byrnes emphasized the program's commitment to supporting veterans in the community, highlighting the critical role it plays in addressing their unique challenges. Byrnes opened her speech by outlining the mission of the YCVOP. "Our primary goal is to ensure that every veteran in York County receives the support and resources they need to lead a fulfilling life," she stated. She emphasized the organization's dedication to aiding veterans in their transition from military to civilian life, addressing issues such as homelessness, unemployment, mental health, and access to healthcare.
Byrnes detailed several key programs under the YCVOP umbrella:
  1. Housing Assistance: The program provides emergency shelter and long-term housing solutions for homeless veterans. They work closely with local shelters and housing authorities to ensure no veteran is left without a roof over their head, Byrnes explained.
  2. Employment Services: The YCVOP offers job training, resume workshops, and employment placement services. Byrnes highlighted partnerships with local businesses and industries to create job opportunities tailored to veterans' skills and experiences.
  3. Mental Health Support: Recognizing the unique psychological challenges many veterans face, the program provides counseling and support groups. They offer PTSD therapy, substance abuse counseling, and peer support groups to help veterans navigate their mental health struggles," Byrnes noted.
  4. Healthcare Access: The outreach program assists veterans in accessing medical care, including regular health check-ups, specialized treatments, and dental care. Byrnes mentioned collaborations with local healthcare providers to offer discounted or free services.
  5. Educational Opportunities: Byrnes emphasized the importance of education in empowering veterans. The program offers scholarships, educational counseling, and vocational training to help veterans pursue further education or new career paths
Byrnes urged the members of the Rotary Club to get involved in supporting veterans. "Our program thrives on community involvement," she said. "There are numerous ways you can contribute, from volunteering your time to providing financial support.
