April 15, 2025 - York County District Attorney Tim Barker spoke to the members of the York East Rotary Club this week, sharing an encouraging message about the strides York County has made in reducing crime. Addressing a packed room during the club’s weekly breakfast meeting, Barker reflected on the challenges the county has faced and the progress made through community partnerships, law enforcement innovation, and public outreach. York County has come a long way, Barker said. When we look back just ten years ago, the statistics and the headlines painted a very different picture. But thanks to collaborative efforts and the dedication of our law enforcement teams, we’ve made measurable and meaningful improvements. Barker attributed much of the success to initiatives that focus on prevention and early intervention. Programs that engage at-risk youth, expand mental health support, and strengthen community-police relationships have helped stem crime before it starts. He also pointed to the creation of a county-wide crime data task force that allows departments to better track trends and respond more effectively. He highlighted a drop in violent crime across the county, citing a double-digit percentage decrease in incidents over the last five years. “These numbers reflect not just good police work but also strong community partnerships,” he noted. Rotary members asked questions ranging from the opioid crisis to strategies for rehabilitating non-violent offenders. Barker responded with enthusiasm, noting that reentry programs and drug treatment courts have proven effective at reducing repeat offenses and helping individuals get their lives back on track.
