Student of the Month

April 15, 2025 - At a recent breakfast meeting of the York-East Rotary Club, York County School of Technology senior Asher Hortman delivered an inspiring presentation highlighting his academic achievements, international volunteer work, and career aspirations in mechanical engineering. Asher was honored as the club’s Student of the Month, a recognition reserved for high-achieving students who exemplify leadership, character, and community involvement. With poise and passion, he spoke about his academic journey at York Tech, where he has excelled in rigorous coursework while pursuing a concentration in engineering. Beyond the classroom, Asher shared his transformative experience on a mission trip to Thailand. “It opened my eyes to the challenges people face around the world and how much impact a small act of service can have,” he said. The trip deepened his desire to use his future career to make a tangible difference. That mission is already taking shape. Asher aspires to become a mechanical engineer with a focus on developing prosthetic limbs for people who are injured or living with disabilities. “I want to help people regain independence and improve their quality of life,” he told the club. “Engineering gives me a way to combine creativity and compassion.” Asher plans to pursue a degree in mechanical engineering after graduation, and with his blend of talent, heart, and determination, the future looks bright—for him and for those he hopes to help.
