February 17, 2026 - When Bernadette Lauer stood before the York East Rotary Club, she shared more than the story of a business — she shared a journey of courage, reinvention, and a deep belief in the power of music to change lives. Bernadette’s professional path began with a Bachelor’s degree in mass communications. She first worked as a weekend assignment editor at WPMT Fox 43, where she learned to thrive in a fast-paced news environment. From there, she transitioned into public service as a public information officer for York County Emergency Management. Her communications career continued to grow with roles at Exelon Nuclear and later at Harley-Davidson, where she ultimately served as a global communications manager. Despite her professional success, Bernadette felt the pull toward entrepreneurship. She explored several ideas — from opening a gym to launching a coffee shop — before discovering something that perfectly combined her business experience, passion for music, and desire to impact her community: School of Rock.
Founded in Philadelphia, School of Rock has grown into an internationally recognized music education franchise. Two years ago, Bernadette brought that vision to York, opening a local campus that has quickly become a vibrant hub for aspiring musicians of all ages. Bernadette spoke passionately about the benefits of music education, referencing research that shows students involved in music often demonstrate higher graduation rates and improved attendance. But beyond statistics, she shared personal stories — students who found confidence, connection, and belonging through music. For many, School of Rock becomes more than a lesson studio; it becomes a second home. Bernadette emphasized the importance of creating a safe and welcoming space where students can express themselves freely. Whether a child is shy, energetic, or somewhere in between, the stage becomes a place to grow in confidence and teamwork. Opening the school required determination and creativity. Bernadette detailed how she financed the venture through a combination of an SBA loan and funds from her retirement savings through a Roth IRA. It was a bold step — one rooted in faith in the mission and belief in York’s community.
She reiterated that live performance is at the heart of the curriculum. Learning chords and scales is important — but stepping onto a stage, working with a band, and feeling the energy of a crowd is transformative. In just two years, Bernadette Lauer has built more than a music school in York. She has created a community where young people and adults alike can discover their voice, build confidence, and experience the joy of making music together. Her journey — from newsroom editor to global communications executive to local entrepreneur — serves as a reminder that sometimes the most rewarding paths are the ones that blend passion with purpose.
