November 5, 2024 – Members of the York-East Rotary Club recently had the privilege of welcoming Sam Dorm, a prominent local historian, community advocate and founder of the Friends of Lebanon Cemetery, as their guest speaker. Dorm gave an enlightening presentation on the history of York's Black community, shedding light on its notable landmarks, resilient spirit, and deep-rooted heritage. Dorm began her talk by guiding attendees through the historical tapestry of Black York, a community rich with stories of determination, culture, and activism. Her presentation featured a virtual walking tour that highlighted significant locations within the community. Through historical images and descriptions, she brought to life these sites, many of which played pivotal roles in local and national history. The tour included churches, businesses, community centers, and homes that were key to the social and economic development of Black York residents over the centuries. One focal point of Dorm's talk was Lebanon Cemetery, a historic burial ground that holds the graves of many notable Black residents. The cemetery, which dates back to the 19th century, serves as a testament to the community's long-standing presence and contributions to York. Dorm emphasized how the cemetery, while a place of rest, also acts as a chronicle of the Black experience in York, with gravestones bearing the names of veterans, civil rights leaders, and everyday citizens who shaped the community. Throughout her presentation, Dorm underscored the importance of preserving these historical sites, many of which are at risk due to urban development and time. Her efforts in conducting and promoting the walking tour aim to raise awareness and honor the legacy of the Black community in York, encouraging current residents and leaders to protect and celebrate this heritage.
The Rotary Club expressed their gratitude to Dorm for her dedication and educational efforts, which not only bring history to life but inspire future generations to appreciate and protect York’s diverse heritage.
