High School Education in 2017

On 10/17/27,  at the weekly breakfast meeting of York East Rotary at Heritage Hills, Michael Snell, PhD,  Superintendent  Central York School District, was the invited speaker.  He discussed how the public perception of the “failure of public education”
is really a misconception.  Parents have all been through the education process and evaluate today’s education format in terms of their experience.  But just as rabbit ears and antennas for TVs have been replaced by satellite dishes and cable boxes, education techniques and technology have moved forward.  He explained how education is now “future” ready, not test ready and we now have mass customized learning.  Mass customization  and personalization allows for different styles of learning at the high school level. Accordingly,  divergent levels means that  the age of the student may not match the designated grade level.  This new style of learning takes into account that everyone learns at a different rate and in a different way. This allows for students to take college level courses while still in high school and to customize their curriculum.  While it may be a new approach to education, the concept is really not new as Albert Einstein once said, “I never teach my pupils. I only attempt to provide the conditions in which they can learn”.
